JUST IN: Arlington Public Schools to open on two-hour delay Thursday

Arlington Public Schools will open on a two-hour delay Thursday morning.

The school system made the announcement at 6 p.m. Wednesday.

“All APS schools and offices will open two hours late tomorrow, Thu, Jan. 9,” said an APS social media post. “The Extended Day program will also open two hours late and morning field trips are canceled. Please use extra caution when travelling to and from school tomorrow.”

This will mark the first day of school for Arlington students since Dec. 20, just before the start of winter break. It comes despite a student-created online petition for remaining closed through the end of the week gaining thousands of signatures.

“Many students and staff currently do not feel safe going to school in these conditions,” the student who created the petition told ARLnow.

Arlington and other Northern Virginia districts remained closed Wednesday, citing icy sidewalks and other hazards, though D.C. public schools were open.
