‘Life Alive Cafe’ hopes to open at former bagel shop in Ballston

An organic, vegetarian-friendly cafe plans to open in Ballston where Bruegger’s Bagels closed in 2023.

Life Alive Cafe is preparing to renovate at 818 N. Quincy Street, county permits show. The Boston-based eatery with a focus on fresh meals for breakfast and lunch is expanding into the D.C. area.

It serves vegetarian meals from scratch

  • Brunch offerings include acai bowls, breakfast tacos and sandwiches, avocado toast, “superfood” waffles and maple-pecan overnight oatmeal.
  • A slate of colorful beverages include tumeric and blue spirulina-infused lattes, matcha, cold-pressed juices and smoothies.
  • Lunch options include 11 varieties of “warm grain bowls,” packed with vegetables and proteins like tofu. There’s also ramen, wraps, soups and salads.

This is Arlington’s first Life Alive Cafe

  • It also appears to be the cafe’s second outpost in the D.C. area, following a late January grand opening in D.C.’s West End.
  • Interior demolition, a brand-new layout, updated utilities and a new mural are detailed in county permits for the Ballston spot.
  • Adjacent to Poppyseed Rye, it’ll join a hub of nearby cafes and breakfast spots, including Ballstonian, South Block, Union Kitchen, Starbucks and Compass Coffee.
