NOW: Large power outage in Ballston area

Just over 7,500 homes and businesses in the Ballston area were without power Sunday evening.

The outage was first reported around 6 p.m. and the exact cause is, so far, unclear.

Among the neighborhoods affected are Ballston, Bluemont, Buckingham and Ashton Heights, according to Dominion’s outage map. Restoration is preliminarily expected between Sunday night and early Monday morning.

Some traffic signals are said to be dark in the area, and the fire department has been dispatched to at least one report of a stuck elevator.

As of 12:45 a.m., the number of Dominion customers still in the dark was down to 4,475, according to the utility company’s website.

This is the latest major outage affecting the Ballston area, which saw a series of outages last year.
