Ballston Macy’s demolition continues with excavation expected this fall

In just a few more months, the Macy’s in Ballston should be completely demolished.

Excavation, the next phase of redevelopment project, is predicted to start next season, developer Insight Property Group told ARLnow. Plans call for 553 new apartments, ground-floor retail and a grocery store.

“We are proceeding with demolition and hope to be in a position to move into excavation sheeting and shoring activities this fall,” partner Sarah Davidson wrote in an email.

Though progress is being made, pedestrians and drivers are not out of the woods just yet. Overhead protection along Wilson Blvd and nearby sidewalk closures are expected to remain in place for at least two more years.

The whole project is anticipated to wrap in 2028.

There’s still no word yet on the project’s forthcoming grocer, though Insight describes the tenant as an “organic grocery store.”

Likely contenders include Whole Foods Market, which has been expanding across Northern Virginia in recent months — including at Falls Church’s Broad & Washington development, another Insight project.

Davidson declined to comment, adding that further details are not expected “until the store is much closer to opening.”
