Washington-Liberty High School principal stepping down for ‘new leadership opportunity’ in APS

Washington-Liberty High School Principal Tony Hall is stepping down to take a new, unnamed leadership job within Arlington Public Schools.

In a message to the Washington-Liberty High School community, Hall said he will continue serving the Arlington community in a different capacity.

“While I am excited about the opportunity to continue serving the Arlington community in a different capacity, this decision was not an easy one,” Hall said. “Washington-Liberty will always hold a special place in my heart. There are so many wonderful memories that I take with me. I am deeply grateful for the trust, partnership, and collaboration I have experienced during my time here.”

Hall did not respond to requests for comment and Arlington Public Schools played their cards close to the chest for the announcement. APS spokesperson Frank Bellavia said the new position is pending School Board approval; it is set to be announced and voted on at the meeting tonight (Thursday).

If approved for the unidentified role, Bellavia said Hall would start in his new position on May 19.

Hall’s full letter to the Washington-Liberty community is shared below.

To the Washington-Liberty High School Community,

It is with mixed emotions that I share with you my decision to step down as principal of Washington-Liberty High School to pursue new leadership opportunities within Arlington Public Schools.

Serving as principal of this incredible school community has been one of the greatest joys of my career. It has been a true honor to work alongside such dedicated educators, supportive families, and, most importantly, our amazing students. Being a General is special! Together, we have cultivated a learning environment centered on high expectations, inclusion, and a deep commitment to student success.

While I am excited about the opportunity to continue serving the Arlington community in a different capacity, this decision was not an easy one. Washington-Liberty will always hold a special place in my heart. There are so many wonderful memories that I take with me. I am deeply grateful for the trust, partnership, and collaboration I have experienced during my time here.

Please know that I will work closely with APS leadership to ensure a smooth and thoughtful transition and updates about future school leadership plans will be shared as they become available.

Thank you again for the opportunity to be part of such a special community. I look forward to seeing Washington-Liberty continue to thrive and grow in the years ahead. Once a General…always a General!

Best Regards,

Antonio (Tony) Hall
