Longtime Ballston wine bar Grand Cru to close this weekend

Only a few days remain for wine lovers to patronize a longtime Ballston bistro.

Grand Cru Wine Bar and Bistro, located on the first floor of 4301 Wilson Blvd, will shutter this weekend to make way for a new tenant after nearly two decades in business.

“We will continue to operate through this coming Sunday,” owner Troy Thorpe told ARLnow. “During this time we will be giving deep discounts to clear out all inventory.”

The restaurant, which offers dozens of different wine options, initially opened in the space in 2007.

“We had a pretty good run,” Thorpe said. “But we have been much slower since COVID and unfortunately cannot pay what the landlord requires for a new lease.”

Grand Cru is open daily starting at 4 p.m. It’s open until 9 p.m. Sunday through Wednesday and until 10 p.m. on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

“People can come this week, Thorpe said. “It will be nice to tell them goodbye.”

Erik McLaughlin, a managing director for Stream Realty, which oversees the property, said that negotiations with a new tenant are ongoing. Since the deal hasn’t been finalized, he could not provide any more information on the tenant’s identity.

Grand Cru’s closure comes on the heels of the shuttering of Pirouette Cafe & Wine Shop, a newer wine-centric spot that operated at 4000 Fairfax Drive in Ballston until Oct. 18.
