‘Wood & Iron’ sports bar aims for February opening at GMU campus in Va. Square

A long-awaited sports bar in Virginia Square plans to open its doors early next year.

Mid-February is the current target for Wood & Iron, a Richmond-based business selling classic bar favorites like jumbo pretzels, smoked jalapeño poppers, burgers and wings, co-owner Steve Rogge told ARLnow.

Wood & Iron announced its plans to open at George Mason University’s Fuse at Mason Square last September, originally shooting to open in spring 2025. Rogge did not comment on the reason for the delays at 3401 Fairfax Drive.

In addition to serving bites like cheesesteak egg rolls, crispy pepperoni rolls and plus wings with 12 different sauces, Wood & Iron — which just recently applied for its liquor license — is expected to serve dozens of different beers and seasonal cocktails.

Rogge said last year that the venue will bring a “fun, exciting environment” whether the big game is on or not.

“It’s not as heavy on the traditional sports bar theme as you would expect,” he said. “While we will have a great view of TVs from every seat and it will be the perfect place to cheer on your team, we pride ourselves on being a restaurant that caters to everyone even when a game’s not on.”

Wood & Iron is the first outside tenant of the nine-story Fuse building, which opened earlier this year as “a hub of robotics, autonomy, and artificial intelligence research at the intersection of AI, immersive technologies and public trust,” according to George Mason University.

Approximately 60% of the building’s space is planned for university programs, with the remainder slated for retail and private office use.
