The second Crystal City entrance at the northwest corner of Crystal Drive and 18th Street S. which broke ground in July 2024, is expected to open in spring 2027, according to WMATA.
It will be located two blocks east of the existing entrance at 18th Street S. and S. Bell Street. The $146.1 million project is meant to improve access to local bus stops, including the Crystal Drive Transitway; a planned Amtrak station; a planned pedestrian bridge leading into Reagan National Airport; the Mount Vernon Trail; and Crystal Drive bike lanes.
Street-level detours have already been in effect to support construction:
- Two northbound lanes are open on Crystal Drive and one southbound lane is shared between vehicle and bike traffic
- On 18th Street South, bike and vehicle traffic share one lane in each direction
- Lane closures and pedestrian detours are marked with signs
