No trash pickup tomorrow in Arlington amid icy conditions and bitter cold

Waste collection has been canceled for a second day in Arlington as the county continues to urge motorists to stay off the road.

Curbside collection and brush pickup will not take place tomorrow (Tuesday), and no make-up runs will happen later in the week. Waste pickup was also canceled today (Monday).

“Please do not place carts or other materials at the curb to ensure the safety of snowplow crews and help them make passes more efficient,” the Solid Waste Bureau wrote in an announcement.

ART buses have also suspended service for the rest of the day “due to the extremely icy weather conditions.”

“We will actively provide updates to service levels once roads are passable and it is safe for both operators and riders to commute. Bus stops will continue to be cleared and treated,” Arlington Transit announced this afternoon. “Thank you for your patience and understanding.”

County snow crews have moved on to Phase 2 of snow removal, clearing primary and secondary arterial roads. Residents can track plowing activity online.

“The best thing the community can do is stay off the roads unless they have to be out — this ensures our crews have plenty of room to work on clearing streets,” county spokesperson Ryan Hudson told ARLnow.

Arlington National Cemetery will be closed to visitors and family pass holders tomorrow, although funerals will continue as scheduled. It’s another snow day at Arlington Public Schools, as well.

Metro trains have experienced delays throughout the day. As of around 1 p.m., they were running every 15 to 30 minutes system-wide.

Airlines resumed flights at Reagan National Airport today after going on pause yesterday, but the airport warned of “lingering delays or cancellations” in an announcement this morning.

Bitterly cold temperatures are in the forecast over the next few days.

The National Weather Service predicts a low of around 3 degrees tonight and wind chills as low as -6. A Cold Weather Advisory was issued this morning.

Arlington isn’t expected to get above freezing for at least a week.
