Virginia’s new state budget will provide Arlington Public Schools with almost $3 million more than leaders were previously expecting.
The school system anticipates receiving $127,439,284 in state funding for the 2026-27 school year, according to a report prepared in advance of the July 30 School Board meeting.
That’s up $2,864,097 from the figure included as a placeholder in the school system’s fiscal year 2027 budget, adopted before the state budget had been finalized.
State funding accounts for about 15% of the county school system’s annual revenue, far less than the 76% typically provided by the county government. Federal dollars represent only about 2.5% of APS funding.
Total expected APS revenue for fiscal year 2027 will be $860,343,417, unchanged from previously reported figures because the extra state revenue will go toward replenishing reserves.
To close a budget shortfall, School Board members this spring had authorized the use of reserve funds for the coming year. With the extra state revenue, the need for reserve funding will be reduced to $16,372,280, school officials said.
The estimated per-student cost for the coming school year will be $26,548 based on a projected enrollment of 27,776 students, according to school officials.
