Shopping for back-to-school supplies and other items will be cheaper in Arlington during a statewide sales tax holiday this weekend.
The three-day holiday, which lasts from Friday to Sunday, temporarily lifts the sales tax on clothing, footwear and school supplies, as well as emergency preparedness products and some appliances.
Arlington’s sales tax is typically 6%.
A complete list of school supplies available tax-free ranges from basics like binders, folders, crayons and loose-leaf paper, to higher-priced items including bookbags, textbooks, calculators and musical instruments.
Most clothes and footwear — like back-to-school staples such as dresses, jeans, socks and sneakers — are also available tax-free. Other eligible items in this category include baby supplies such as diapers and receiving blankets, along with higher-end products such as suits, wedding apparel and formal wear.
Ineligible items include handbags, jewelry, protective equipment and sports equipment such as mouthguards, spikes, ballet shoes and baseball gloves.
Outside of school supplies and clothing, the tax holiday covers portable generators that cost $1,000 or less and gas-powered chainsaws priced at $300 or less.
Hurricane preparedness items like batteries, flashlights and radios are also eligible if they cost $60 or less.
A final category of tax-free items is energy-efficient home goods like light bulbs, air conditioners and dishwashers. They must bear the Energy Star or WaterSense labels.
