Coffee Republic departs Crystal City area after less than a year

A Crystal City-area coffee shop shuttered last week after less than a year in business — though the chain hopes to open another Arlington location soon.

Coffee Republic, which opened last March on the ground floor of Azure National Landing, served its last cup of joe at 3130 Potomac Avenue on Thursday.

“While we can’t go into specific details regarding the private agreement reached with our previous landlord, we viewed this as the right time to transition,” CEO Sean Flynn told ARLnow. “We are incredibly grateful for the support the Potomac Yard and National Landing communities have shown us at that location.”

The coffee shop has cleared out all of its neon lighting and disco ambience as of today (Tuesday). All that remains is a handful of interior furnishings and a printed out sign noting a forthcoming location in Bethesda.

Though that is the chain’s next confirmed opening, much of the National Landing location is actually expected to shift over to a new Arlington spot that is currently in the works.

“We are currently in final talks to acquire a specific, vacated space in Arlington that is ready for us to move in,” Flynn said. “Our goal is to stay in the Arlington market permanently.”

Founded in 2003, the North Carolina-based chain offers “meticulously sourced organic coffee” and “signature quirky beverages,” catering to “aficionados and novices alike,” according to its website.

To eat, Coffee Republic’s cafes also offer a wide selection of baked goods like muffins, danishes, cookies and coffee cake.

“Our mission is simple yet profound: to forge a welcoming space where coffee meets community — and where each sip comes with a smile,” the brand’s website reads.

Despite the closure of the Crystal City-area location, Coffee Republic still operates three spots in the D.C. area: two in the District and one in Rockville, Md.
