Lane closures are coming to the George Washington Memorial Parkway starting next week, for a resurfacing project.
Crews will remove the top layer of worn asphalt in both directions and repave the road in two sections: between Spout Run Parkway and I-395, and between Reagan National Airport and First Street in Alexandria, according to NPS. The work is expected to continue through mid-June, weather permitting.
The resurfacing comes as the parkway has seen extensive construction in recent years. A $161 million reconstruction of the northern section of the parkway, from Spout Run up to the Beltway, has largely wrapped up after bringing periodic lane closures and detours for several years to a road previously beset by potholes and sinkholes.
NPS has also been making bridge repairs at Glebe Road, Pimmit Run, Gulf Branch and the Route 123 interchange.
Work will begin the week of March 23 on the section between Spout Run Parkway and I-395 with the following traffic pattern:
- Weekday morning rush (5:30-9:30 a.m.): Two southbound lanes toward D.C., one northbound lane.
- Weekday evening rush (2:45-7:15 p.m.): Two northbound lanes, one southbound lane.
- Midday on weekdays (9:30 a.m.-2:45 p.m.), overnight (7:15 p.m.-5:30 a.m.) and weekends: One lane open in each direction.
Crews will mill and pave during the day, overnight and on weekends.
NPS said the project may also require ramp closures along the parkway, with more information to be shared before those closures begin. Drivers are advised to use caution in work zones, watch for crews and road debris, and follow posted speed limits.
Message boards and construction signs along the parkway will provide updated information.
