A Ballston-based defense technology firm is investing $19 million to expand its Arlington headquarters and add 210 jobs, doubling its Virginia workforce.
Innovative Defense Technologies, headquartered at 4401 Wilson Blvd, develops automated software tools that help U.S. military programs integrate, test and field new systems faster. The expansion was announced today by Gov. Abigail Spanberger (D), who approved an $800,000 grant from the Commonwealth’s Opportunity Fund to help Arlington land the project.
Additional funding for employee training will flow through the Virginia Jobs Investment Program, and the Virginia Economic Development Partnership worked with the county to secure the deal, according to a release from the governor’s office.
The release describes IDT as a contractor that “solves one of the hardest challenges for the Department of War” by automating the integration and testing of new military capabilities.
“The mission we support is complex and Virginia has been central to how we execute that work, with deep technical talent and close proximity to the customers we support every day,” IDT Chairman and CEO Bernie Gauf said in the release.
“Innovative Defense Technologies’ expansion in Ballston reflects Arlington’s strength as a place where advanced technology companies can grow and thrive,” said Arlington County Board Chair Matt de Ferranti. “IDT will join a vibrant community of companies and institutions driving innovation in Ballston and will add to our highly skilled workforce.”
Del. Patrick Hope (D), who represents the Ballston area, also praised the announcement.
“I am thrilled to welcome Innovative Defense Technologies’ expansion in Arlington, which further solidifies our region’s standing as a premier hub for technical talent and national security innovation,” Hope said. “This $19 million investment and the creation of 210 new jobs reflect the strength of our workforce and our commitment to supporting mission-critical solutions for our country.”
State Sen. Barbara Favola (D) also issued a statement supporting the deal.
Founded in 2006, IDT also maintains offices in Fall River, Massachusetts; Mount Laurel, New Jersey; and San Diego.
