Costco food court in Pentagon City closed for renovations starting today

The Costco in Pentagon City is temporarily closing its food court for a couple months of renovations.

The wholesale retailer at 1200 S. Fern Street is planning to overhaul its dining area with updated kitchen equipment and fixtures, resulting in a closure starting today (Tuesday), General Manager John Ward told ARLnow.

That means shoppers will have to take their cravings for a chicken bake or $1.99 pizza slice elsewhere — at least for the next eight to 10 weeks.

“We’re tearing it down and rebuilding it in the same spot, so nothing is changing, per se,” Ward said. “It’s just kind of refreshing it and getting closer to the times, because it’s an old food court.”

Most construction will be done overnight to avoid interference with shoppers, he said.

In August 2024, Costco applied for a permit to conduct a $9.6 million food court overhaul that included demolition and “installation of a new food court with all associated equipment.”

Another permit application also mentioned installing new bakery and deli equipment, a “revised sushi layout” and “an expansion to the existing electrical mezzanine.”

Costco’s corporate office did not respond to a request for comment on the project.

Costco’s lease in Pentagon City is expected to last for another 23 years. After that, the Pentagon Centre Development Site Plan envisions redeveloping the site with increased density.
