School Board members are expected to expand options for excused absences in the upcoming school year.
To comply with changes to state law, three new categories may be added to the existing 13 qualifying for excused absences at Arlington Public Schools:
- Up to five excused-absence days will be available to students visiting with a family member on active duty or who is being sent on deployment, is on leave from deployment or is returning from deployment
- Students who are members of Native American tribal nations will receive an excused absence when attending a powwow gathering
- Up to five days of excused absences will be available to students participating in a 4-H educational program or activity
School Board members will consider the change as part of their consent agenda on Thursday.
The meeting will be the last for the School Board before the start of school on Aug. 31. Also on the agenda will be a staff proposal making several calendar adjustments at the elementary school level this school year to accommodate parent-teacher conferences.
