‘Walk & Roll to School Day’ returns to Arlington tomorrow

Families at several Arlington schools are joining thousands around the country in a celebration of walking and biking to school.

Tomorrow (Wednesday) is National Walk & Roll to School Day, an annual event encouraging families to get outside and choose physical activity to get to school, when possible.

The following schools in Arlington are among almost 3,000 nationwide where families are participating in the event:

  • Arlington Science Focus School
  • Campbell Elementary School
  • Discovery Elementary School
  • Escuela Key Elementary School
  • Innovation Elementary School
  • Montessori Public School of Arlington
  • Taylor Elementary School
  • Tuckahoe Elementary School

“Remember the thrill of riding a bike for the first time or walking or rolling to school on the first day?” the Walk, Bike & Roll to School website says. “There’s a feeling of joy and independence — a sense of adventure — that doesn’t fade.”

The events are intended to promote healthy habits around exercise and lead to less pollution. Organizers say that walking and biking can also be safer than driving, particularly in neighborhoods with walking school buses and bicycle trains to keep kids together and make them more visible.

A similar event, National Bike & Roll to School Day, will return in the spring on May 5.
