Union Jack’s Shut Down By Health Dept.

The restaurant was closed yesterday after a county food inspector discovered that the restaurant did not have any hot water, according to Michael Peter of the Arlington County Dept. of Human Services.

“The restaurant was closed by one of our food inspectors due to an imminent health risk,” Peter told ARLnow.com. “It was reported and confirmed that Union Jack’s had no hot water in the restaurant.”

Hot Weather Tips and Free Fans for Seniors

Arlington’s Agency on Aging offers free fans to low-income seniors. The program, sponsored by Dominion and the Va. Dept. for the Aging, is open to Arlington residents 60 or over, with income at or below 150 percent of the federal poverty level, and a home without air conditioning or fans.

Arlington also administers Virginia’s Cooling Assistance Program. Qualifying households can apply for the program, which assists with the purchase of cooling equipment and/or the electricity to power that equipment, between June 15 and Aug. 15. Plane Gets Stuck in Mud at DCA

Around 3:45 p.m., Delta Airlines flight 1763, bound for Minneapolis, left the taxiway pavement while taxiing to the runway, according to airport spokesman Christopher Paolino. The plane’s right side landing gear then became stuck in the turf.

No one was injured during the incident, and all passengers were offloaded, returned to the terminal and rebooked on different flights.

Moran Participates in NOH8 Campaign

The gay rights campaign is described as a “photographic silent protest.” It was organized by celebrity photographer Adam Bouska and partner Jeff Parshley in response to the 2008 passage of Proposition 8, which invalidated the recognition of same-sex marriage in California.

Moran was one of 67 members of Congress to participate in a photoshoot for the campaign, and one of only two in Virginia. (Rep. Gerry Connolly, the Fairfax County Democrat, was the second.)

‘Green Pig’ Chef Honored With RAMMY Award

At a swanky ceremony in a D.C. hotel last night, Harlan was announced as the winner of the RAMMY award for “Rising Culinary Star of the Year.”

In his acceptance speech, a visibly emotional Harlan thanked his staff, “who make me look good every day;” his family, who “believed in me to do my best;” and “every chef and cook I’ve ever worked with.”

UPDATED: Homeless Men Attacked Outside Library

The attack took place just before 3:00 a.m., on the 1000 block of N. Quincy Street.

Police say the men, who are brothers, were sleeping on benches outside the library when another man approached and began arguing with them. The argument escalated and the suspect then brandished a machete and began slashing at the victims, police said.

Morning Poll: Restaurant Tax to Hit 10 Percent

As the Sun Gazette reports, the higher rate is due to a 1 percent increase in the state sales tax — a tax hike that’s earmarked for transportation projects. In all, half of the 10 percent tax will go to the state, while the other half will go the Arlington County.

Arlington’s restaurant tax revenue includes 4 percent for the county meals tax and 1 percent for the county’s share of the sales tax.

Fire at Courthouse Printing Store

A fire broke out at the USA Print & Copy store at 2044 Wilson Blvd in Courthouse late Saturday night.

Firefighters responded to the family-owned store around 11:30 p.m. for a report of black smoke coming from the one-story structure. Upon arrival, firefighters forced entry into the store and discovered an active fire in the back of the building. It was extinguished by 11:45 p.m.
