Waste collection has been canceled for a second day in Arlington as the county continues to urge motorists to stay off the road.

Curbside collection and brush pickup will not take place tomorrow (Tuesday), and no make-up runs will happen later in the week. Waste pickup was also canceled today (Monday).

Arlington Public Schools will be closed for a second day tomorrow (Tuesday).

The school system, which also closed schools today after the weekend’s winter storm, announced the closure this afternoon “due to the accumulation of ice and snow.”

Yesterday’s winter storm brought quiet streets and winter fun to Arlington, even as fluffy snowfall turned to icy sleet.

Snow blanketed the streets, which were mostly empty except for the occasional car or snowplow, and iconic views, including those in Arlington National Cemetery. At the same time, local kids — who have the day off from school today (Monday) — took to the parks for sledding and other merriment.

Drunk driver gets 8 years for killing woman while speeding the wrong way on GW Parkway

A drunk driver who struck and killed a woman in a head-on collision on GW Parkway has been sentenced to 8 years in prison after pleading guilty to manslaughter.

Carlos Hernandez Romero — who did not have a driver’s license and who was driving 80 mph in the wrong direction the night of Jan. 1, 2025 — admitted to aggravated DWI manslaughter, according to a press release from the Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office for Arlington and Falls Church.

Sleet piles up on snow in Arlington, likely affecting Monday commutes

Heavy sleet has continued throughout the afternoon in Arlington, bringing total accumulation up to over half a foot.

The National Weather Service warned of impacts on morning commutes in an update this afternoon, advising that “travel could be nearly impossible” as a result of the sleet, snow and possible freezing rain later today. ARLnow measured 7 inches of snow and sleet in North Arlington as of 2 p.m.

As winter storm approaches, officials tell residents to expect days of icy roads

The severe winter storm expected to arrive tonight in Northern Virginia will likely bring days of slippery conditions on Arlington’s streets and sidewalks, authorities warn.

A Winter Storm Warning goes into effect at 11 p.m. tonight ahead of around 6-10 inches of expected snow, sleet and ice. Up to 14 inches of accumulation is possible in the region, with snow expected to turn to sleet tomorrow morning and freezing rain by Sunday evening, according to the Capital Weather Gang.

Arlington trash pickup canceled on Monday, weekend closures announced ahead of snowstorm

At least one day of trash collection has been canceled in Arlington as authorities are urging residents to prepare and stay off the roads during this weekend’s snowstorm.

Curbside collection and brush pick-up will not take place on Monday, and no make-up runs will happen later in the week, Arlington’s Department of Environmental Services announced today (Friday). Residents are advised to check the county website for any further updates about pick-up on Tuesday and beyond.

A four-mile race centered around Ireland’s Four Courts in Courthouse is returning this March, reviving a longtime tradition.

The Four Courts Four Miler will begin and end on March 14 at the restaurant and bar located on a hill at 2051 Wilson Blvd. Runners will first descend the hill, then turn around and run back up to be “rewarded with a tasty beverage,” says a description for the event run by DC Road Runners Club.

Developers close on hotly debated 530-unit project in Green Valley

A pair of developers have closed on a planned 530-unit project in Green Valley, planning to deliver a mix of multifamily units and townhouses in early 2028.

Charlotte-based Crescent Communities and New York City-based Rockefeller Group announced the closing of 2480 S. Glebe Road in a press release today (Thursday), a project that sparked significant debate over gentrification concerns prior to securing County Board approval in April 2025.

State of emergency declared, ‘widespread power outages’ expected during snowstorm

Gov. Abigail Spanberger has declared a state of emergency ahead of this weekend’s snowstorm, which is expected to bring power outages along with heavy accumulation throughout Virginia.

The newly inaugurated governor signed an executive order today declaring an emergency “due to severe winter weather,” with the most severe impacts expected Saturday and Sunday. The D.C. area is likely to get more than 5 inches of snow, with double-digit accumulation also possible, according to a Winter Storm Watch issued today.
