Arlington Public Schools will be closed tomorrow (Monday) due to the snowstorm.
All schools and offices will be closed, and all extracurricular activities, games, team practices, field trips, adult education classes, and programs in schools and on school grounds are canceled, APS announced at noon today.

Roads in Arlington are snow- and sleet-covered as of 9 a.m., leading to driving difficulties even for the professionals.
As of 8 a.m., 5 inches of snow accumulation were measured in North Arlington by ARLnow, as an increasing amount of sleet started mixing with the flakes.

Northbound I-395 and S. Glebe Road are reopening after an earlier closure caused by a vehicle that crashed into a propane tank along the highway.
“Units are on scene of a propane leak from a 500-gallon tank at the N. Glebe Rd exit on I-395 northbound after a vehicle struck the tank,” the Arlington County Fire Department said on social media at 7 p.m. “I-395 northbound is closed for the foreseeable future. The driver was not injured. Crews are actively working to mitigate the leak.”

The severe winter storm expected to arrive tonight in Northern Virginia will likely bring days of slippery conditions on Arlington’s streets and sidewalks, authorities warn.
A Winter Storm Warning goes into effect at 11 p.m. tonight ahead of around 6-10 inches of expected snow, sleet and ice. Up to 14 inches of accumulation is possible in the region, with snow expected to turn to sleet tomorrow morning and freezing rain by Sunday evening, according to the Capital Weather Gang.

At least one day of trash collection has been canceled in Arlington as authorities are urging residents to prepare and stay off the roads during this weekend’s snowstorm.
Curbside collection and brush pick-up will not take place on Monday, and no make-up runs will happen later in the week, Arlington’s Department of Environmental Services announced today (Friday). Residents are advised to check the county website for any further updates about pick-up on Tuesday and beyond.
The Arlington County Police Department is investigating a pair of overnight break-ins at two businesses in the Old Dominion neighborhood.
Bill’s Ace Hardware and a neighboring service center, National Tire & Battery (4801 Langston Blvd), were both targeted, according to scanner chatter and a tipster.

The temporary rules imposed after last year’s collision of an airliner and an Army helicopter to improve the safety of the crowded airspace around Washington D.C. are being made permanent, the government announced Thursday.
The Federal Aviation Administration took steps to make sure that helicopters and airplanes would no longer share the same airspace around Reagan National Airport shortly after the investigation into the Jan. 29 crash began. The rules also prohibit air traffic controllers from relying on visual separation and require all military aircraft to broadcast their locations.

Group Assault in Pentagon City — “The juvenile female victim was inside a business when the juvenile female suspect, who is known to her, allegedly approached and made threatening statements towards her before assaulting her. Additional juveniles in the area then also began assaulting the victim. The assault briefly broke up before the group continued the assault and subsequently dispersed upon police arrival. The suspect attempted to flee the scene and following a foot pursuit, she was taken into custody inside the Pentagon City Metro Station.” [ACPD]
Power Outage Along the Pike — “More than a thousand Dominion Energy customers lost power [on Thursday] in Arlington after a squirrel got into the equipment… Dominion Energy confirmed in an email to DC News Now that the squirrel got on a piece of equipment at the Bailey Crossroads substation. Gov. Abigail Spanberger has declared a state of emergency ahead of this weekend’s snowstorm, which is expected to bring power outages along with heavy accumulation throughout Virginia.
The newly inaugurated governor signed an executive order today declaring an emergency “due to severe winter weather,” with the most severe impacts expected Saturday and Sunday. The D.C. area is likely to get more than 5 inches of snow, with double-digit accumulation also possible, according to a Winter Storm Watch issued today.
