A new partnership between the county government and a local church aims to preserve, improve and maintain public access to a historic cemetery.

The county government plans to install perimeter fencing, access gates and a bench at Calloway United Methodist Church’s cemetery at 5000 Langston Blvd, one of the oldest church-affiliated African American graveyards in all of Arlington.

An updated plan for an affordable housing building near Langston Blvd has received mostly praise but some criticism from the Housing Commission.

The Housing Commission was provided an update on Dec. 4 on the plan to replace 40 garden-style apartments at the Leckey Gardens apartment complex with a 10-story apartment building with 249 committed-affordable units.

After years of discussion and hours of public testimony this weekend, the County Board has approved a substantial expansion to Pentagon City’s RiverHouse development.

In a series of 5-0 votes, Board members approved JBG Smith’s proposal to add 132 four-story townhome-style properties as well as two mid-rise multifamily buildings, one of 102 units and the second of 509, at the 36-acre RiverHouse site along Army Navy Drive and S. Joyce Street.

County Board members are promising a detailed written response after Lyon Park residents accused the local government of cutting down and carting off a “gateway” tree without cause.

The removal came despite efforts of the Lyon Park Citizens Association to preserve the tree, which had been located for the past 40 years on an island in the middle of N. Fillmore Street near 3rd Street N.

A proposal to add hundreds more homes to Pentagon City’s RiverHouse site is heading to the County Board this week with the Planning Commission’s blessing.

The Planning Commission voted unanimously last week to recommend approving JBG Smith’s plan to add more than 740 townhouses, stacked flats and multifamily units to the 36-acre parcel located along Army Navy Drive and S. Joyce Street.

County Board members didn’t need to look far to find their next county attorney.

Board members voted 4-0, with Julius “JD” Spain, Sr., absent, to appoint Ryan Samuel to the post yesterday (Tuesday). Samuel has served in the county attorney’s office since 2018 and, since the departure in September of his predecessor MinhChau Corr, was acting county attorney.

Several former elected officials in Arlington are expressing caution over moving too fast on potential changes to the county’s form of governance.

At issue at the moment is a proposal to form a working group to study possibilities. It has attracted skepticism from former County Board, School Board and General Assembly members advocating for restraint on embarking on change-of-government planning.

County Board members continue to be divided on how quickly to move forward with a new advisory panel to look at governance issues over the coming year.

As things now stand, there appears to be a 3-2 Board majority to move forward in setting up the panel and determining its responsibilities at a meeting sometime in mid-December.

The Arlington treasurer’s office is seeking to curb a growing rate of tax delinquency with new tools and additional personnel.

The addition of QR codes on delinquency letters, in combination with the hiring of two new collection employees, leaves Chief Deputy Treasurer Kim Rucker optimistic about the possibility of lowering the delinquency rate despite challenging economic times.
