With Kaiya Ovando leading the way with two victories, a number of athletes from Arlington schools had top finishes at the multi-team Carolyn Legard Relays at C.G. Woodson High School.

Ovando, of Yorktown High School, won the girls discus and shot put competition with throws of 114-2 and 34-1, respectively, in the day-long track-and-field meet last Saturday (March 29).

What has been a busy three-sport high-school senior year recently included a verbal commitment from Emmett Engelhardt to participate in Division I college athletics.

The runner and basketball player for the Washington-Liberty Generals will attend American University to be a member of the men’s cross-country and indoor and outdoor track-and-field teams, continuing his year-round sports involvement.

Two young runners from the Bishop O’Connell High School boys indoor track-and-field team placed high in the mile at a late-season meet.

Jayse Brefczynski had one of his most successful races of the indoor season when the sophomore won the mile in 4:34.24, with his freshman teammate Peter Fleenor in sixth in 4:43.43.

Fourth-place finishes were the highest recorded by Arlington athletes at the Virginia High School League Class 6 girls and boys state track-and-field championship meets, held March 3-4 in Virginia Beach.

The fourths were achieved by the Wakefield Warriors’ Travon Buckner in the boys triple jump (44-10.75) and the Yorktown Patriots’ Reid Dalley in the boys 1,600-meter run (4:20.74).

With district and region girls indoor track-and-field championships already won this winter, the Washington-Liberty Generals now go after the biggest prize in the sport.

On Monday and Tuesday, March 3 and 4, in Virginia Beach, the Generals will attempt to win the Virginia High School League Class 6 state championship.

There weren’t any individual champions, but there were notable performances from some young Bishop O’Connell Knights athletes at the private school indoor state track-and-field meet.

The O’Connell girls and boys high-school teams each finished 11th in the overall team standings.

Led by a victory from Liam Keish, a versatile performance by Travon Buckner and other top individual finishes, the Wakefield Warriors placed second in the boys 6D North Region track-and-field championships.

Wakefield scored 59 points in the two-day meet Feb. 13-14. The first day’s events were held as scheduled in Prince George’s County, the second day being moved to Episcopal High School in Alexandria owing to weather. The South Lakes Seahawks won with 119.

A standout individual performance and top relay finishes were big reasons the Washington-Liberty Generals won a region indoor track-and-field championship.

In addition, there were other key contributors as the Generals achieved the girls high-school title for the first time.

Earning big points by nearly sweeping the high jump helped the Wakefield Warriors win a third straight Liberty District boys track-and-field championship.

Wakefield won the high-school meet with 135 points. That total included 25 points in the high jump, with the Warriors finishing first, second, third, fifth, seventh and eighth in the event.

Gabriela Netwall and Ella Kaplan were big point-scorers in helping the Washington-Liberty Generals win the Liberty District girls track-and-field championship.

Each participated in multiple individual events in the high-school meet, and ran on the winning 4×200 relay in 1:48.66, as the Generals amassed 140 points.

Different high-school track and field teams from Arlington had strong showings at a couple of different recent meets.

For the Washington-Liberty girls, Ella Kaplan won two events and was second in another at a competition at the Thomas Jefferson Community Center in Arlington.

The Wakefield Warriors recently won both the girls and boys multi-team track-and-field indoor meets at Thomas Jefferson Community Center.

The girls were first with 104 points and the boys with 154. Both high-school teams had multiple winners of individual events, and combined for three victories in relay races.
