Different high-school track and field teams from Arlington had strong showings at a couple of different recent meets.

For the Washington-Liberty girls, Ella Kaplan won two events and was second in another at a competition at the Thomas Jefferson Community Center in Arlington.

While the Yorktown Patriots won a second straight Liberty District girls basketball game, on the same date their counterpart boys team lost for the first time in league play this season.

The high-school contests were at different sites against the Marshall Statesmen on Thursday (Jan. 30). The girls won 45-24 on the road. The boys never led, losing at home, 64-49, having a six-game winning streak snapped.

Some high-school postseason competitions for winter sports teams are on the schedule over the coming week.

Liberty District swimming and diving, girls gymnastics and track-and-field championships involving the Wakefield Warriors, Washington-Liberty Generals and Yorktown Patriots all are on the calendar.

The Wakefield High School girls wrestling team showcased its talent at the recent Orange County Open tournament.

The competition was hosted by Orange County High School in Orange, Va., and included more than 300 wrestlers. Wakefield entered six wrestlers and finished 15th in the team scoring. There were 54 teams entered.

Some high-school postseason action for winter sports teams are set to begin, with the Liberty District swimming and diving and track-and-field championships for the Wakefield Warriors, Washington-Liberty Generals and Yorktown Patriots.

The coming week also includes plenty of regular-season basketball, wrestling, gymnastics, ice hockey and track-and-field action for Arlington teams.

With two straight significant victories, the Washington-Liberty Generals boys basketball team has entered the conversation as a contender in the Liberty District.

The Generals snapped a three-game losing streak with league wins over the host Langley Saxons, 65-57, then the visiting Wakefield Warriors, 58-44, on consecutive nights.

Led by standout wrestler Cameron Millsapps, the Wakefield Warriors enjoyed a strong performance at the La Luchadora Classic girls high-school competition.

Millsapps won the individual championship at 152 pounds at the 28-team event. She dominated the weight class with a 4-0 record and four pins.

Another consistent and unselfish performance on the basketball court gave the Yorktown Patriots sole possession of first place in the Liberty District with a 3-0 record.

The boys high-school team (11-1) moved into that spot with a 67-32 home blowout victory over its Arlington rival Wakefield Warriors (8-5, 3-1) Tuesday night (Jan. 14).

The Bishop O’Connell Knights girls and boys swim and dive teams will be in action in at the Northern Virginia Catholic Championships in an event that will highlights a busy sports schedule for varsity high-school teams in Arlington.

The meet is set for Saturday, Jan. 18.

The Marshall Statesmen and Wakefield Warriors on Monday (Jan. 13) played another of their low-scoring, physical boys basketball games that sometimes resemble a hard-checking NHL-playoff match.

Host Wakefield won the Liberty District seesaw high-school contest, 35-34, when Marshall’s Osteen Fraser failed to sink a baseline jump shot at the buzzer.

The Wakefield Warriors and Yorktown Patriots won in boys high-school basketball action Friday night (Jan. 10) to remain undefeated at 2-0 in the Liberty District.

The Wakefield boys got 16 points from Keyon Tiggle and 10 each from Jeremiah Poole and Koopar Odar in their 55-51 home victory over the McLean Highlanders.


Sports

Some high-school basketball teams in Arlington won’t have much time to practice next week. Instead, the varsity squads will be busy playing games.

The Wakefield Warriors girls and boys teams each have four games scheduled from Monday (Jan. 13) to Friday (Jan. 17).
