Survive and advance was all that mattered, and it accomplished by the host and No. 2 seed Washington-Liberty Generals in a first-round region football playoff game Friday night (Nov. 15).

Undefeated Washington-Liberty (11-0) blanked their rival and No. 7 seed Yorktown Patriots, 28-0, in the 6D North Region tournament contest.

In recognition of his achievements, the senior recently was chosen as the Liberty District’s Offensive Player of the year for the 2024 high-school season.

On Saturday (Nov. 9), it was a case of mission accomplished.

They fell short of repeating as girls region cross-country champions, but the Yorktown Patriots ran well enough to finish runner-up and earn a berth into the upcoming state meet.

Arlington high schools have a much less busy and shorter week of sports action ahead, with final regular-season football games and playoff events for a few teams as the fall season has ended for a number of squads.

There will be one football game Friday night (Nov. 8)  between the host Wakefield Warriors and Washington-Liberty Generals in an all-Arlington showdown. The Bishop O’Connell Knights and Yorktown Patriots play Saturday (Nov. 9).

Schools

Three public high schools in Arlington are stepping up security measures after a trespassing incident at Yorktown last week.

Starting this week, students at Yorktown, Wakefield and Washington-Liberty high schools will need to show a pre-approved ID to staff members to enter school buildings. Accepted forms include school-issued photo IDs, StudentVue accounts and government-issued IDs such as a driver’s license.

Instead of wasting time discussing or writing down their team’s primary goal for the 2024 football season, the Washington-Liberty Generals concentrated on accomplishing that task on the field.

On Saturday (Nov. 2) the high-school team did just that — winning a second straight Liberty District championship.
