Seniors at Washington-Liberty High School kicked off the first day of school today (Monday) with an annual “Senior Sunrise” tradition on the school’s football field.

Students from the class of 2026 began shuffling onto the field around 6 a.m., and by sunrise, about 100 of them had gathered at War Memorial Stadium to celebrate. As they took pictures, lounged on blankets and enjoyed a free breakfast treat, some reflected on what it meant to begin their final year of high school.

Some students are questioning the logistics of Arlington Public Schools’ plan to roll out locked phone pouches in all of its high schools this school year.

When APS high schoolers go back to school, they’ll be required to lock their phones away in a magnetically sealed pouch for the entirety of the school day. The intended purpose is to combat negative impacts of phones on learning and social-emotional health.

It’s almost time for “Friday night lights” in Arlington as the county’s three public high school teams get ready for the upcoming season starting on Aug. 28.

Wakefield, Washington-Liberty and Yorktown are in different stages of development and expectations, but they all play in the Liberty District. That means they will all face one another this season.

An Arlington Public Schools employee has been arrested for alleged inappropriate contact with a female student.

Rene Alfredo Escobar Jr., a 31-year-old instructional assistant assigned to Washington-Liberty High School, faces charges of contributing to the delinquency of a minor and committing a second stalking offense within five years.

He came close in his final meet, but Emmett Engelhardt’s goal of winning a state championship during his high-school career eluded the Washington-Liberty senior runner.

At this season’s outdoor Class 6 state championship boys track and field meet in Virginia Beach, Engelhardt finished second in the 1,600-meters in a 4:13.98, one of his top high-school times in the race.

The Arlington School Board appointed a new principal at Washington-Liberty High School last night (Thursday) in a controversial vote.

The unanimous decision to select Alexander Duncan III — currently the executive principal of Alexandria City High School, Virginia’s largest public high school — came despite efforts to keep interim principal Christian Willmore.


Sports

With a region soccer championship on the line, the stakes were the highest ever in the most recent meeting between the Washington-Liberty Generals and Yorktown Patriots.

Playing on their home field, the Patriots built a 2-0 halftime lead, then hung on to win the 6D North Region tournament final, 2-1, on June 5.

Horace Willis, a staff member at Washington-Liberty High School for 28 years, recently was hired to be the head coach of the school’s girls varsity basketball team.

Williams — known to most as “Buck” — takes over for Maddy DeCou. She left after two seasons in the position to become an assistant coach on the staff at nearby Marymount University.

With two individual champions for each team leading the way, the Washington-Liberty Generals placed third in the girls and boys region outdoor track-and-field championships.

In addition, both Wakefield and Yorktown high schools brought home individual championship from the event.

A former substitute teacher at Washington-Liberty High School was indicted last week for allegedly engaging in a two-year sexual relationship with one of his students.

An Arlington grand jury indicted Timothy Thomas McGhee, 47, on a charge of taking indecent liberties with a minor.


Sports

The Yorktown Patriots extended their girls softball season with victories over the Herndon Hornets and Langley Saxons in the Liberty District tournament.

Third-seed Yorktown (12-11) topped sixth-seeded Herndon, 10-5, in the first round, then upset and blanked second-seed and Langley Saxons, 5-0, in the semifinals to extend the high-school team’s winning streak to five.

As usual, Gabi Netwell was plenty busy during a track-and-field meet, most recently helping the Washington-Liberty Generals finish first in the girls Liberty District outdoor high-school championships.

The junior placed high in seven events as the Generals won with 118 points, just six more than the co-runner-ups Wakefield Warriors and Langley Saxons. The meet was held on two days over two weeks at Wakefield.
