Arlington high schools have a much less busy week of fall sports action ahead, but there are postseason tournaments still in progress for some teams.

There will be two football playoff games Friday night (Nov. 15)  involving three Arlington teams, plus the semifinals of the Class 6 state girls field hockey tournament for the Yorktown Patriots.

Sports

Three high-school football teams from Arlington will play first-round playoff games in postseason tournaments Friday (Nov.15) with 7 p.m. kickoffs.

The Washington-Liberty Generals and Yorktown Patriots will meet in a 6D North Region contest. Washington-Liberty (10-0) will host the showdown.

Sports

In spite of lopsided losses in two of three final regular-season football games, the Yorktown Patriots have still qualified for the region playoffs.

Yorktown (6-4) will be the seventh seed in the eight-team field of the 6D North Region tournament. The Patriots will face the No. 2 seed, undefeated and host Washington-Liberty Generals (10-0) in a first-round game.

Sports

They fell short of repeating as girls region cross-country champions, but the Yorktown Patriots ran well enough to finish runner-up and earn a berth into the upcoming state meet.

With 61 points, the Langley Saxons won the 6D North Region high-school event Nov. 6 on the 2.98-mile Burke Lake Park course. Runner-up Yorktown scored 88.

Sports

With the state tournament now ahead, the Yorktown Patriots are very much in the running to finish on a high note and repeat as Class 6 girls field-hockey champions.

Like a year ago, Yorktown (15-4) enters the Virginia High School League’s state tournament as the runner-up in the 6D North Region tourney. The host Patriots lost to the defending champion Oakton Cougars, 1-0, in the Nov. 6 region final.

Sports

Arlington high schools have a much less busy and shorter week of sports action ahead, with final regular-season football games and playoff events for a few teams as the fall season has ended for a number of squads.

There will be one football game Friday night (Nov. 8)  between the host Wakefield Warriors and Washington-Liberty Generals in an all-Arlington showdown. The Bishop O’Connell Knights and Yorktown Patriots play Saturday (Nov. 9).

Schools

Three public high schools in Arlington are stepping up security measures after a trespassing incident at Yorktown last week.

Starting this week, students at Yorktown, Wakefield and Washington-Liberty high schools will need to show a pre-approved ID to staff members to enter school buildings. Accepted forms include school-issued photo IDs, StudentVue accounts and government-issued IDs such as a driver’s license.

Sports

It will be deja vu all over again in the championship match of this season’s girls 6D North Region field-hockey tournament.

For the second straight year, the defending champion Oakton Cougars and Yorktown Patriots will meet in the high-school title match, set for tonight (Wednesday, Nov. 6) at 7 p.m.

Sports

A week off seemed to have been good for the Yorktown Patriots, considering how they bounced back with a strong performance and a winning result on the football field.

Yorktown (6-4, 3-2) defeated the visiting Marshall Statesmen, 24-14, in Liberty District high-school action Nov. 2. That was after getting blown out by the Langley Saxons in the team’s previous game, followed by their regular-season bye week.

Sports

The Washington-Liberty Generals and Yorktown Patriots have reached the semifinals of the 6D North Region girls field-hockey tournament.

In order for the Arlington rivals to meet in the championship match on Wednesday (Nov. 6), the high-school teams have to win matches set for Monday (Nov. 4) at 7 p.m. Yorktown (14-3) will host the Madison Warhawks (16-3) and W-L (13-6) will play at the defending champion Oakton Cougars (18-2).

Sports

At significant cross-country races on the Burke Lake Park course this fall, Emmett Engelhardt has won two, with another still to come.

His latest victory on that 2.98-mile trail was on a warm Wednesday afternoon (Oct. 30) at the boys Liberty District high-school championship meet.

Sports

Arlington high schools have a full week of sports ahead, including many playoff events.

There will be no football games Friday night (Nov. 1)  involving Arlington teams, because of the observance of a no-play date for Fairfax County schools owing to the Diwali Hindu festival.
