Bayou Bakery Begins Soft Opening with Limited Menu

For two short, unannounced hours today, Courthouse’s new Bayou Bakery opened its doors and started serving customers. The soft opening will continue tomorrow, “from 8:00 a.m. until I have to say ‘Uncle,'” according to a Facebook post by owner/chef David Guas.

Guas had originally hoped to open yesterday, but that plan was foiled by a late Certificate of Occupancy.

Bayou Bakery, which is more of a cafe/restaurant hybrid, will be closed on Sunday. No word on when it will “officially” open with regular hours and a full menu.

A late certificate of occupancy. I’m not surprised. The county department that handles those is a big joke with the worst employees. The manager overthere should be shown the door, along with the zoning administrator. Ugh!

my BF and I stopped by this morning, and found it quite pleasant, although there were a lot of kinks to get worked out. the coffee service moved at a glacial pace, while the kitchen worked quickly, resulting in almost-cold beignets by the time I got my coffee. the beignets were smothered in powdered sugar (far too much for my tastes), and the chicory coffee was remarkably un-chicoried. I also ordered a hot chocolate, which tasted exactly like swiss miss. the regular coffee was acceptable, although the barista could use a bit more training. the staff were all very nice, and I was more than happy to make a donation in lieu of payment.

the physical space is quite comfortable, and one the kinks get worked out, I’m sure it will be a fantastic spot.

“beignets were smothered in powdered sugar”

      That’s how you serve them.

LOL… this person will probably write a Yelp review about “too spicy” Jambalaya or “too crumby” French Bread in a week’s time. I was there at the same time and everything was fast and friendly! (and FREE)

Beat me to it. They are supposed to be covered…at least that’s how Cafe du Monde does it down in NOLA.

yeah, I’m used to being covered in powder after eating them in NOLA. Wish I knew they’d opened…and about the FREE part.

Where is it? I went on a wild goose chase trying to find it. No one knew!

    • It’s across from the Jerry’s Subs on North Courthouse Road

And I mean, landmarks, what’s it next to, and the like–not the address.

as of Saturday morning, the signage above te entrance still read “camille’s sidewalk cafe.” it’s kitty-corner from the courthouse parking lot. does that help?

      • Katie

Yep, so across from Summer’s and, as ArlNow wrote, Jerry’s. The servers at 4Ps I asked said–no way can it be in that direction, we’d have noticed it on our way to work.

The tested sandwiches were on-target, and with some tweaks they will be spot-on. Very promising indeed. Looking forward to an expanded menu there as well once they get the current stuff all set.
