Real Estate Predictions For 2011 — Local Realtor Laura Rubinchuk has released her predictions for the Arlington real estate market in 2011. Expect flat prices, sluggish sales, fewer foreclosures and more groundbreakings, says Rubinchuk.

Ballston Shell Station Bites the Dust — The Shell station at Wilson Boulevard and North Randolph Street has been shuttered. It will be torn down soon, to make way for the Founders Square development. More from TBD.

  • Oh Yeah

    Cute squirrel….

    • NPGMBR

      I’ve never seen one that wasn’t! 😉

    • Nutty

Thank-you for noticing…..I try to check my appearance before I leave my nest in the morning.

  • Westover

That Shell was an institutionin my family! I can remember going to that car wash with my dad in the early 70’s!

  • Matt!

I never thought I’d be sad to see a gas station close, but back when I had a car the Shell was MY gas station. Ah, progress.

  • CrystalMikey

Sorry…man that sucks about the Shell station, I just discovered its car wash this year and would skip many a gas station just to drive to this one. 🙁

    • mehoo

I don’t know about you apartment dwellers, but if you have a single family home, buy a stinkin’ hose and a bucket and wash your own car.

      • CrystalMikey

Ain’t that the truth! Heck, that’s one of the biggest reasons I want my own, to ave a driveway to wash my car. Until then, I’m at the mercy of this area’s lack of car washes

      • TGEoA

For you green enivor-weenies get some Optimumn No Rinse car wash. You don’t even need a hose and it works GREAT.

        • green enviro-weenie

          Thanks, I’ll check it out.

  • Courthound

We noticed it was closed last weekend. Sad. Their car wash was the best. Now the closest one is the “highest gas in the county” Exxon at Wlson & Rhodes. i loved how the guys would do a little spray-down of the bugs on the front. It was a nice touch.

  • MrStevens

Where am I going to get a quick rinse for my car this winter?

  • Brian

Noooooooooo. This is truly awful. Couldn’t care less about the gas station being gone but this was the only inexpensive automated car wash in town that did an OK job. Now it’ll be $15-20 to get my car washed anywhere else. Major bummer.

    • It’s a bit of a hike, but there’s a gas station/car wash at 5842 Columbia Pike in Falls Church. See: http://gasandcarwash.yolasite.com/carwash-menue.php

There’s also the Exxon at Wilson Blvd at North Rhodes Street.

      • FrenchyB

The Jiffy Lube at 6220 Wilson Blvd. (just before Seven Corners) also has a cheap car wash.

      • Arlwhenever

The wait at the Columbia Pike location can be longer than it appears — the two or three cars waiting along the side of the building, are part of a longer line of eight or ten cars ahead because the line snakes around the back before entering the wash.

    • rft

there’s also an exxon car wash where Washington Blvd, Lee Hwy, and 66 all come together

  • PGFDE121

If you sign up for the Mr. Wash email they’ll send you some 50% off coupons every once in awhile. There are a few of those around (closest on Glebe and RT50) that do a decent job but a few bucks more than the Shell.

    • NPGMBR

+1, I got a hold if this little nugget a few years ago and just sit around and wait for them to semd me emails before I’ll get my car washed. Best part is sometimes they send them more than once a month.

  • OddNumber

The Shell station closed just before Thanksgiving, so if folks are just now noticing it is gone then it must not be that big of a loss. Although I will miss their car wash.

Well thats sucks! Whenever I wanted to pay for more gas that was the Shell I always went to.

  • Thunderdome

I’ve got a bucket, sponge, soap, and a hose. Oh, some good rubber gloves to keep my hands warm when it is too cold out too!

    • CrystalMikey

Sweet…may us apartment dwellers use this hose? haha

  • mehoo

Why doesn’t this area have any do-it-yourself coin-op car washes? Laziness?

    • CrystalMikey

I wish we had those…I’d be one their best customers. Nearest one to me is in Oxon Hill…went there once, felt semi-safe. Regardless, it was busy and just raking in the quarters!

    • LP

      They’re eyesores.

There is one however on Rt.7 basically across from Peking Duck in the Baileys Crossroads area.

      • mehoo

Clearly this area abhors eyesores. Wouldn’t want to have any ugly buildings around here.

    • DB

Although it isn’t a traditional coin-op car wash the BP at Walter Reed and Four Mile has one. You buy a token from the attendant and wash your own.

  • Mkt Common

Why oh why are there no self-service car washes in the area????

  • mehoo

You could all do what I do – wait until it rains and don’t worry about it in the meantime because it’s just a car.

    • FrenchyB

      That’s my method too.

  • Carmen

When I had a car I would go to that station for gas and a wash.

  • CW

I loved that station. My car gets very unhappy when it has anything other than V-Power. The Shell down on Washington Boulevard is impossible to get into and out of without a major accident.
