Route 50 Lane Closure May Be Lifted Next Month

The lane closure on westbound Route 50 near Courthouse is expected to be lifted next month, according to VDOT.

On-going utility work has kept the far left-hand westbound lane closed well past its originally planned July 2010 reopening date. We heard in September that the lane would likely be closed through the end of last year. Alas, construction crews are still working and westbound Route 50 is still reduced to just two lanes.

VDOT spokeswoman Jennifer McCord says the lane will reopen in mid-April “if the weather cooperates.”

Any word on when the county will complete the 10th Street and Court House Road onramps? These have been in the pipeline for years, and are some of Arlington’s most dangerous intersections.

These projects on Route 50 are all VDOT projects, not County projects. VDOT controls the schedule.

Re-construction of the on ramps at 10th street and Courthouse Road should start once the gas line relocation is complete. It will be a fun 3 years in the Rt.50 corridor.

  • Thanks for the update! It’s nice to think the end is finally in sight…

Now if only there was a way to force all the cars into the left two lanes to make getting onto 50 from Courthouse road easier in the afternoon…

I don’t understand why people stack up there every day in the afternoons. There are two or three other ways people can get on westbound 50 from the courthouse area rather than sitting there in line for 10 minutes. I did that once and learned my lesson. I’m not saying it isn’t a terrible on-ramp, because clearly it is. But if you are tired of sitting there, it’s much easier to go around.

I agree – I live practically spitting distance from that entrance – yet if I need to drive somewhere – I’ll drive down Fairfax Drive (towards Rosslyn) to get to that extremely long and isolated acceleration lane.

I used to complain about this with my old commute, but it was about the eastbound Route 50 drivers in the right lane causing northbound Route 27 to back up. I don’t do that commute anymore, but out of simple courtesy I think drivers on Route 50 still need to stay out of the right lane from Rosslyn to Fillmore St.

Wait…got my eastbound/westbound 50 messed up. You know what I mean.

Best news all day! RIP Nate Dogg.

    Finally! What was/is the holdup?

Don’t celebrate too soon. The utility work is just the preamble to the main event, the reconstruction of the eastbound lanes between Pershing Dr. and about Rhodes Street and construction of a long new elevated offramp for Courthouse Road and 10th Street. Plus a new westbound local service lane from east of Courthouse around to 10th. The lane closures and disruption involved in that will make the delays to date seem small.
