Kaine Announces U.S. Senate Candidacy — Former Virginia governor Tim Kaine has quit his job as chairman of the Democratic National Committee to run for the U.S. Senate in Virginia. Kaine is running for the seat of the retiring Sen. Jim Webb (D). Announced Republican candidates for the seat include former governor George Allen and state Tea Party leader Jamie Radtke. Sorority to Hold Chili Cook-Off and Bingo Fundraiser — The Northern Virgina alumnae chapter of the Delta Gamma sorority will hold a chili cook-off and bingo fundraiser at the Lyon Village Community House (1920 N. Highland Street) on Saturday night. The event starts at 7:00 p.m. and benefits the blind and visually-impaired. Tickets are available online for $25 apiece. [Clarendon Nights]

Murky Coffee Tax Cheat Moves West — Former Murky Coffee owner Nick Cho has packed up and moved to California. Cho, who owes Arlington County $56,000 in back taxes from his Clarendon cafe, is trying to relaunch his coffee career in the Silicon Valley area. In addition to his Arlington debts, Cho owes D.C. about $190,000 in back sales taxes. [Washington Post]

Thank You! — A big thank you to everyone who voted for ARLnow.com in TBD’s #DCjournotweeps poll. ARLnow.com editor Scott Brodbeck narrowly edged out WTOP’s Neal Augenstein for the title of “best journalist using Twitter to cover local news.” [TBD]

  • Congrats on the win ArlNow if only it came with a cash prize…

    • reader

you do a great job scott! the site is all too addictive

    • Dems for New Leadership

Surprise – NOT! Another Arlington business / resident / employee / you-name-it cheating Arlington on their taxes and not being pursued by the County. The County Manager and this Board need to get serious about tax collections, including all of the personal property cheats out there – (large) group rental houses, Gates of Ballston, Ballston Park, and other large apartment complex neighborhoods. Hey, Ingrid, you know about these abuses. If you are unwilling or unable to go after these cheats, then scrap the personal property tax and propose a new system. Taxpayers need to let the County Board know how they feel about lax tax collections coupled with out-of-control spending habits.

      • ChrisG

Doesn’t this responsibility lie with the Commissioner of Revenue? She’s up for re-election this year too; isn’t she? If you’re serious about your name you know what you need to do.

  • Southeast Ben

Arlnow, any numbers/statistics on government shutdown and impact on Arlington, VA? Seems to be a hot-button topic.

    • Anon

Or what about a “How to handle tourists aimlessly wandering around Arlington bc all the free museums are closed” tutorial?

    • Max

I would actually appreciate this too. While I don’t work for the government, I’m wondering what effect this will have on our police, fire protection, etc. since Arlington seems to get a lot of money from the federal government. Also wondering what effect this will have on Metro service.

      • Sam

Not to mention all the furloughed residents who will no longer be dining at restaurants, shopping at grocery stores for more than milk/ramen/TP, or going to movie theatres, malls, and other recreational activities.

        • Aaron

If you think Arlington feds are going to stop spending money simply because they’re not earning any income, you obviously don’t know Arlington.

  • The Kaine campaign’s out with another YouTube video this morning. http://bluevirginia.us/diary/3532/whipple-clips-dozen-wednesday-morning

It should be fun watching “Felix Macacawitz” matching up his record in the U.S. Senate – voting 97% in lockstep with George W. Bush, calling it a “wounded sea slug” and trying as hard as he could to get out of there! – with Tim Kaine’s. We also get to hear Allen talk about the “real Virginia,” about his “habitual use of the ‘n word'”, and about how brown people really aren’t all “macacas” after all. Get some popcorn, everyone, this should be entertaining.

    • Lou

Tim Kaine has no record in the Senate. There’s nothing to compare.

      • Burger

I think he was pointing to the fact Kaine generally rode the coattails of Warner to the governorship.

So, I think he is saying it will be your typically two hack politicans going after each other.

  • Bluemontsince1961

Kaine….Allen…..they both had their “day in the sun”; it is time for BOTH parties to bring out new candidates instead of recycling the same ole, same ole.

    • Lou

It is bad when all the buzz is about two out of work politicians who do not want to talk about their past affiliations and try to cast themselves as new. It’s like when everybody gets all excited about who Brett Favre is going to play for.

      • Bluemontsince1961

Absolutely agree with you, Lou. Both are staler than last month’s bread.

      • Dan

Well how about bringing back Jeff George ??

        • MIchael H.

Didn’t you hear the latest news? Daniel Snyder has just signed Chad Pennington to a 10-year contract. (Yes, I know there’s the lockout and all, but Snyder finds a way around such inconveniences.)

    • Burger

      Agree completely.

thought the option for the GOP is Jamie something or other and she is a certifiable nut.

  • OX4

That’s ok…Neal Augenstein wins the award for most annoying radio voice. I’m Neyawl Awwwwwgunsteeeeen.

    • Southeast Jerome

      hahaha +1

  • 4Arl

Congrats, Scott! Well deserved recognition for ARLnow.

  • Congrats on the Twitter cred Scott! Also, thanks for the link to the Delta Gamma cook off!

  • Christ, I think I’m not going to vote for any Senate candidate. Maybe I’ll just write in “Overgrown Bush”.

    • Bluemontsince1961

ROFL! Ain’t it the truth! Maybe I’ll write-in Overgrown Bush as well.

    • V Dizzle

I’m a write-in for the November 2009 elections. I received one vote for County Board, and one for Lieutenant Governor. Someone named “Invalid” beat me in both. Basically, I’m famous.

      • V Dizzle

Oops, it was County Board and School Board.

  • Josh S

If you don’t like either the Dem candidate or the Rep candidate, please vote for the third party candidate. Doesn’t matter if it is Libertarian or Green or etc. We NEED a third party to shift political dialog back to the issues and away from posturing / competing.

    • V Dizzle

Totally agree. Get ready for the haters. 🙂

  • CrystalMikey

    Congrats on the award!

  • CW

  • Bluemontsince1961

Congratulations on your award, Scott! You do a great job in providing local Arlington news!

  • Tabby

And I just may attend that chili cook-off.

  • Dan

    The award is well deserved.

  • Courthouse

Congrats on the award!!! Great to see Scott recognized for all his excellent work.

  • BoredHouseWife

  • Brandon C

    Junkpunchers moves west!

  • bradfordpared

Kaine and Allen r both over the hill but Allen is more so with his smarmy smile and faux-sincerity/interest in people and politics. Kaine should stay with the DNC.
