Outdoor Movie Coming to the Pike

Crystal City has ’em. Rosslyn has ’em. Now Columbia Pike is getting in on the act.

On Saturday, Aug. 27, the Columbia Pike Revitalization Organization will host its first outdoor movie. The inspirational football flick The Blind Side will be screened at the new, grassy public square at the Penrose Square development, starting at 8:00 p.m. Giant is co-sponsoring the family-friendly movie night.

CPRO Executive Director Takis Karantonis says the screening is a trial of sorts — a one-time event that will hopefully lead to a full-fledged outdoor summer film festival on the Pike next year.

“We are trying to find ways to use the public spaces” along the Pike, Karantonis said. “We can’t put pressure to create new public spaces if we don’t use the ones we have.”

    first showing:
    Streetcare Named Desire

    • charlie

Zimmerman could play Stanley Kowalski just fine.

      • Tabby

      • Tabby

I suppose you’d like to see Barbara Mikulski as Stella?

        • charlie

          the casting couch is open.

          Now that’s n-a-s-t-y!

Will the movie be projected on the side of the CVS? Will N. Arlingtonian Bullock deign to visit S. Arlington?

    • Josh S

That sad excuse for a lawn will not attract Sandra Bullock. Nor will I bother to sit on it for The Blind Side.

      Show Rear Window.

  • KalashniKEV

    First Showing:
    “Coming to America”

  • NomNom

Too bad this kind of event will only last until we get the whatever-ton concrete, geometrical sculpture installed. I doubt we will be able to see around it.

  • enna

    +1000 for “Rear Window”!!!! 🙂

  • John M.

    “Taxi Driver”

Hmmm…nice idea but not sure how this will work right on a major roadway. Add to that the fact that pet owners have been taking there dogs to that space to dump on it since the grass was installed.

    • Josh S

Yeah, I was wondering how they will orient the screen. It might be best to have it not visible from the Pike.

    • Poppycock

Pretty sure the Penrose Square folks haven’t watered this lawn since it was installed.

  • YTK

Yo Poppycock — not to worry — the Penrose DOGS have “watered” (and more) that lawn. Enjoy the movie! Just watch where you sit.
