Coming Soon: Ice Skating at Pentagon Row

by ARLnow.com October 18, 2011 at 9:15 am 5,202 15 Comments

Yes, it’s that time of the year again.

Workers have started installing the ice skating rink at the Pentagon Row shopping center (1101 S. Joyce Street). What serves as a concert and outdoor dining venue during the summer will soon be transformed into a wintry skating rink, complete with instructors providing skating lessons and (starting as soon as Nov. 12) a nightly artificial snow fall.

Weather-permitting, the skating rink is expected to open two weeks from today, on Tuesday, Nov. 1.

In other ice-related news at Pentagon Row, the Maggie Moo’s ice cream shop is no longer Maggie Moo’s. The shop is still selling ice cream and frozen yogurt, but without the Maggie Moo’s branding.

They should allot time for pond hockey-style games. No goalies, 3-4″ tall goals, no threat of collateral damage to local businesses, etc. Not only would I personally enjoy playing in ’em, but I think it’d attract folks, promote the game, and provide a marginal lift to the local economy.

    • CW

Sounds good to me. I always think it’s cool that they allow the street hockey games right behind the White House.

    • Chris

That’s actually a legit good idea. I’d grab some humus or falafel to go and watch a pond hockey game, that would be a hell of a good evening out.

Wait, why duplicate what the County has provided indoors at Ballston: 2 year-round, hockey-game size ice rinks with cheap garage parking while playing or wathing?

  • Bob

That is the most depressing news of the week. Winter.

  • Johnny Utah

i almost broke my neck there last winter. It was awesome. I just wish the rink was bigger.

I usually end up almost destroying some poor child that gets in my way when I am going full speed.

I totally checked some old lady into the boards there. I was like, hey, stop going so slow old lady.

Can anyone tell me why all of the trees in Pentagon Row have netting around them? Is it to keep the birds out of the trees? Just thought it was pretty sad.

    • Johnny Utah

I’m sure it is to benefit the health of the tree. I don’t think the city is purposefully oppressing the trees.

    • V Dizzle

You aren’t talking about the Christmas lights possibly? Didn’t notice netting.

      • W Dizzle

wait. what are you talking about?

  • Arlington Resident

I wouldn’t put it past the city to net the trees to minimize cleaning up bird poop.

    • V Dizzle

Hmm, a new invention? Tree diapers.
