JUST IN: Severe Thunderstorm Watch issued for tonight, with more heat and storms tomorrow

Severe Thunderstorm Watch for July 16, 2024 (via National Weather Service)

Arlington, the District and other parts of the D.C. region are now under a Severe Thunderstorm Watch.

The watch is in effect until 10 p.m. Storms packing damaging wind gusts, hail, and lots of lighting are possible Tuesday evening.

Arlington has missed most of the recent severe weather in the D.C. area amid the extended heat wave, including a strong storm last night that knocked down trees in parts of Loudoun County, Montgomery County and northern parts of the District.

The temperature measured at National Airport reached 104 degrees today, meanwhile, reportedly tying a record. The heat helps to fuel the formation of storms later in the day.

In addition to today’s Severe Thunderstorm Watch, Arlington is under an Excessive Heat Warning until 8 p.m. The heat will continue tomorrow (Wednesday), with a Heat Advisory in effect from 11 a.m.-8 p.m. and more severe storms expected.

From NWS:

…EXCESSIVE HEAT WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 8 PM EDT THIS EVENING…
…HEAT ADVISORY IN EFFECT FROM 11 AM TO 8 PM EDT WEDNESDAY…

* WHAT…For the Excessive Heat Warning, dangerously hot conditions with heat index values around 110. For the Heat Advisory, heat index values around 105 expected.

* WHERE…Portions of central, northeast, northern and southern Maryland, The District of Columbia and central and northern Virginia.

* WHEN…For the Excessive Heat Warning, until 8 PM EDT this evening. For the Heat Advisory, from 11 AM to 8 PM EDT Wednesday.

* IMPACTS…Extreme heat and humidity will significantly increase the potential for heat related illnesses, particularly for those working or participating in outdoor activities.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS…Very warm and humid conditions will persist into the overnight hours, adding heat stress to those without air conditioning. Ensure to stay hydrated and find ways to stay cool.
