Cafe near Courthouse rebrands as ‘Cafecito’ under new owners

Mexican flavors and a new moniker have arrived at a cafe near Courthouse following a change in ownership.

Business partners Jessica Cordova and Arturo Encarnacion took the reins of Mumu Cafe late last month. Now called “Cafecito,” the coffee shop at 1924 N. Uhle Street serves new beverages, lunch items and pastries sourced from local Mexican-American entrepreneurs.

“We are very eager to have a lot of people here that can enjoy our not only the coffee — which is great, as you can see — but also our food,” Cordova told ARLnow. “We are bringing more flavors and more experiences of homemade cuisine.”

It has new drinks and pastries

  • New to the menu are horchatas, iced horchata lattes and quesadillas, available to order with chicken tinga or carne asada.
  • Locally sourced pastries include matcha and s’mores flavored conchas, dulche de leche brownies and a keto-friendly orange loaf.
  • So far, Cordova and Encarnacion have made minor changes to the interior. They plan to extend cafe hours and are awaiting permit approval for outdoor seating.

The owners are also caterers

  • Cordova and Encarnacion own Antojo Foods, an Alexandria-based catering business specializing in Mexican food.
  • The duo began searching for a brick-and-mortar restaurant space in early 2024 and purchased the cafe from previous owner Jermaine Williams.
  • Williams opened Mumu Cafe in 2021. The spot was previously home to vegan-friendly eatery Naked Lunch.
