Vietnamese eatery in Annandale teases Crystal City relocation plans

The team behind a Vietnamese restaurant in a closing Annandale food hall is dropping hints about its upcoming project in Crystal City.

Balo Kitchen, which is closing this summer along with the rest of the vendors at The Block in Annandale, has teased a new “project” in Crystal City this fall. Its owners, Huy Nguyen and Long Lai, are slated to design the menu of the upcoming Scapegoat Beer Garden at 556 22nd Street S.

Balo’s Annandale spot closes in late August

  • One of five vendors at The Block, Balo offers banh mi and dishes like dan dan noodles, papaya salad and pork belly with rice.
  • It also serves some fusion dishes like roti tacos, dan dan chili cheese fries and cheese steak banh mi.
  • The food hall is closing to make way for a 280-unit redevelopment project.

‘Stay tuned for our next project’

  • Balo, which did not respond to requests for comment, announced its closure on Facebook last Saturday while teasing its future plans on Restaurant Row.
  • “Thank you for being a part of our story,” management wrote. “Come visit us one last time in Annandale, and stay tuned for our next project in Crystal City, coming this fall.”
  • Scapegoat Beer Garden, which plans to offer pan-Asian comfort foods, bar snacks and brews, has been in the works since January.
