UPDATED: APS announces Monday status as snow starts to stick

Update at 9:20 p.m. — Arlington Public Schools will now be closed on Monday, the school system announced.

Earlier: The snow is starting to accumulate in Arlington as another winter storm ramps up.

The wintry weather has already prompted a two-hour delay Monday for Arlington Public Schools. The delay was announced around 5 p.m., about an hour-and-a-half after neighboring Fairfax also announced a delay.

Montgomery County schools and the federal government, meanwhile, have also announced delayed openings.

From APS:

Mon, Feb. 23, 2026: Code 2 – All APS Schools & Offices Will Open 2 Hours Late

CODE 2: Due to the impending inclement weather, all APS schools and offices will open two hours late tomorrow, Mon, Feb. 23, 2026. We are continuing to monitor conditions overnight. Any changes to this status will be announced by 5 a.m.

The Extended Day program will also open two hours late and morning field trips are canceled. All essential personnel, including custodial and maintenance staff, food service and transportation staff should report to work at their regularly scheduled time. All other employees should report to work two hours past their usual start time.

So far, there’s no word on the county’s residential trash collection status for Monday.

As of 3:30 p.m. the flakes were starting to mix with rain in parts of North Arlington, from East Falls Church to Cherrydale, while southern neighborhoods like Crystal City continued to see all rain. As of 5 p.m., all of Arlington was seeing snow and it was starting to accumulate on grassy surfaces in the county’s northern neighborhoods.

The temperature in one northern Arlington neighborhood, about a mile from Chain Bridge, was just above 32 as of 5 p.m., down from 35 an hour-and-a-half earlier.

A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for the immediate D.C. area, with 2-4 inches predicted, though a heavy snow band between 6-8 p.m. could potentially up the accumulation totals in Arlington, according to a post from the Capital Weather Gang.

Because the storm started as rain, Arlington County and VDOT crews were unable to pre-treat roadways.

The county’s Dept. of Environmental Services says road crews are “keeping an eye on the big flakes coming down for now.” Road plowing typically doesn’t start until there’s at least 2 inches of accumulation on roadways.
