Scoop N Scootery ice cream shop holding June grand opening in Clarendon

The Scoop N Scootery has set a June grand opening date for its new late-night ice cream shop in Clarendon.

The ice cream franchise will hold a grand opening on Saturday, June 6 at 1138 N. Irving Street with merchandise and treat giveaways to celebrate. The shop plans to offer more than 70 loaded sundae variations for pickup and delivery until 2 a.m., five days per week.

The first 75 people in line for the grand opening will receive a complimentary merchandise item, with options including T-shirts, tote bags and stickers, franchisee Ryan Majdalawieh told ARLnow. The shop is also planning some rolling ice cream giveaways and activities throughout the day.

The Scoop N Scootery’s dozens of elaborate sundaes, like the carrot cake-topped “Fat Rabbit” and peanut butter smothered “Peanut Butter Bomb,” have earned the brand a popular presence on social media.

These flavors will be available in Clarendon, as well as some Arlington-exclusive creations that will drop later in the summer, Majdalawieh, who owns and operates the new location with his family, said.

“These are going to be crafts, concoctions that we have in-house,” Majdalawieh said. “We’re also going to be offering things like shakes and floats, as well as freshly baked cookies.”

Located at the former Jimmy John’s storefront, the new shop will function as a pickup window with outdoor seating only. The revamped space will also have a mural with references to the D.C. area.

The location is the first in Virginia for the franchise, which got its start in 2014 as a Boston-area ice cream truck before moving into its first brick-and-mortar in the town of Arlington, Mass. The shop’s business model is designed to be “very optimized” for third-party deliveries, Majdalawieh said.

“Anyone that orders delivery can expect to get a perfect sundae as if they were just ordering it at the actual shop,” he said.

Majdalawieh, who aspired to get into the local dining scene, said he first discovered the brand on TikTok before embarking on the franchising process last summer. He recalled feeling excitement when he saw a video advertising the shop’s Massachussetts store, thinking it was in Arlington, Va.

“I was like, ‘OK, I gotta try this,” he said. “My aunt, who actually lives in Boston, sends me the same TikTok. So I said, ‘Yeah, you know, we’ll give it a try once you come down and visit.’ And she was like, ‘No, this is Arlington, Massachusetts, like Boston.’ … My dreams got shattered a little bit.”

Majdalawieh wasn’t the only one to make that mistake. The shop’s grand opening announcement on social media features screenshots of commenters who had the same mix-up.

The franchisee said he is currently in the early stages of planning other D.C.-area shops, but declined to comment on specific locations.

The Scoop N Scootery’s planned hours in Clarendon are 3 p.m.-2 a.m. Tuesday through Saturday and 3-10 p.m. Sunday. The shop is currently hiring.
