Two studies on traffic safety on Carlin Springs Road are expected to kick off next month.
County officials are planning two separate evaluations:
- The first will focus on N. Carlin Springs Road from the westbound Arlington Blvd ramps to N. Wakefield Street
- The second will consider the stretch of S. Carlin Springs Road from the westbound Arlington Blvd ramps to 8th Place S
“This is going to be a big push to engage the community,” said David Patton, a transportation planner and the government’s liaison to the Pedestrian Advisory Committee.
He briefed committee members on the plans at their Sept. 9 meeting. At the meeting, a number of committee members volunteered to serve on the work groups.
A kickoff open house for the two efforts is slated for Tuesday, Oct. 6 at 7 p.m. at Kenmore Middle School.
The initial goal of the effort is to have the community “tell us where the problems are, where we should be paying attention,” Patton said. Concept plans and design options will then follow in a “big, ambitious planning exercise.”
To date, the most significant concerns about Carlin Springs Road have centered on the portion south of Arlington Blvd heading toward Columbia Pike.
Three schools — Kenmore Middle School, Campbell Elementary and Carlin Springs Elementary — are along that stretch of roadway, which has been the scene of several major accidents in recent years.
Another incident occurred on S. Carlin Springs Road at 5th Road South on Sept. 11. While there was vehicular damage, there were no significant injuries, according to one account.
VHC Health plans to locate a major behavioral-health center in the 600 block of S. Carlin Springs Road, which could add to overall congestion.
