Construction starting soon on upgraded fields at Kenmore Middle School

Construction work on two upgraded fields adjacent to Kenmore Middle School is expected to begin within the next few weeks.

The project will convert the existing natural-turf fields into synthetic turf and redesign the field space to accommodate a variety of sporting uses. New lighting, seating, walkways and landscaping are part of the project, as is improved access along 2nd Street S.

Construction “will begin as early as the week of Nov. 16 — weather-permitting,” county officials said in a public notice, adding:

“As construction begins, you will see fencing and other construction prep in the area. The fields at Kenmore will be blocked off and closed from public use. Please use caution and follow all posted signage.”

County Board members in July approved a construction contract worth up to $8.93 million, including a 10% contingency.

Overall, the renovation project is slated to cost $10.14 million. Work is expected to be completed in about a year.

The Arlington Soccer Foundation and Arlington Sports Foundation have pledged $1 million each toward total construction costs, with Arlington Public Schools contributing $2.44 million. Part of the costs will be recouped through user fees, county officials say.

The fields are located in the middle of a Glencarlyn-area parcel containing the middle school along with Carlin Springs Elementary School.
