When no one else stepped forward to fill the void, years ago John Mingus made a one-season commitment to coach his young daughter’s Arlington Soccer Association recreation girls team.

Now, 25 years later, Mingus, 59, is still coaching recreation soccer teams in the league.

A longstanding soccer organization in Arlington has opened a new indoor training facility and headquarters in the Penrose neighborhood.

The Arlington Soccer Association’s new 9,200-square-foot facility, called the Arlington Training Center, opened at 140 S. Wise Street last month with the goal of supporting year-round training.

The Arlington Soccer Association‘s boys 2008 White team earned a berth to play in the Eastern Regional Presidents Cup this month for the fourth year in a row.

The competition will be held in Valley Forge, Pa. A victory in the event will earn the squad a berth to play in the National Presidents Cup, held next month in Tampa.

The Arlington Soccer Association will host its 55th anniversary gala on Saturday, April 5 at 7 p.m. at the Knights of Columbus Hall on Little Falls Road.

One purpose for the event, for adults only, will be a fund-raiser, with all the proceeds benefiting the Kenmore Middle School field-turf conversion project.

The Arlington Bulldogs, a recreational boys soccer team, has been nominated and chosen to participate in the national 4-H Ignite competition in March.

The Arlington Soccer Association team’s roster consists of players from mostly Arlington high schools at the under-15 and under-16 age levels.
