County facilities closed Monday as roads remain snow- and sleet-covered following storm

Arlington County community centers, libraries and other facilities will be closed Monday as the cleanup continues from today’s winter storm.

About 7-8 inches of snow and sleet fell in Arlington. Hours of sleet has resulted in an especially dense and heavy covering over local roads and sidewalks, making plowing and shoveling more difficult.

As of publication time, Arlington was in Phase 2 of its snow response, focusing on primary roads. Most major roads seen on traffic cameras as 9 p.m. remained covered, with neighborhood streets only sparsely plowed. Nearly 40 county plows are currently active, according to Arlington’s snow activity map.

Officials have been urging locals to stay home and off the roads unless absolutely necessary, due to treacherous conditions.

Virginia State Police say they responded to a total of 37 crashes in Northern Virginia, including two involving injuries, over the duration of the storm. Even the professionals have been having trouble: an Arlington public works truck crashed into a house on S. Glebe Road earlier Sunday and, in Alexandria, a snow plow overturned in a crash.

With an official National Weather Service snowfall total of 6.8 inches at Reagan National Airport as of 7:30 p.m., residents and businesses will now have 36 hours to clear sidewalks under the county’s snow removal ordinance.

Arlington’s Dept. of Parks and Recreation, meanwhile, says the county closure will affect “group and individual activities… unless otherwise stated.”

“Any impacts to classes and programs at Arlington County community centers, parks, or facilities will be communicated directly to program participants via email,” DPR said.

Arlington Public Schools earlier announced that schools would be closed on Monday. Before that, the county announced that trash collection was cancelled for Monday.

Additionally, federal offices are closed, with “maximum telework in effect.”

Metrobus service is suspended until 6 a.m. Monday, with the transit agency citing “impassable road conditions.” ART bus service will be suspended to start the day Monday.

“We will actively provide updates to service levels once roads are passable and it is safe for both operators and riders to commute. When available, some staff will be out clearing bus stops,” Arlington Transit said. “Thank you for your patience and understanding.”

While county facilities are closed and judicial proceedings cancelled, one thing that will still be happening Monday, according to the county’s operating status page: parking meters will still be enforced.
