Update at 4:45 p.m. — Firefighters report that the gas has been shut off. Police are attempting to open up a lane of traffic through the intersection.

Fairfax May Be ‘Big Winner’ From Streetcar — The Columbia Pike streetcar may be an economic boon to Fairfax County. Fairfax is planning to use its portion of the future streetcar system to lure office tenants to the Skyline and Baileys Crossroads areas. Already, promise of the streetcar might be helping to sway the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to move to Skyline from Ballston. [Sun Gazette]

Office Absorption Down as Sequester Takes Hold — The D.C. region, particularly Northern Virginia, is shedding office tenants. The region typically “absorbs” about 900,000 square feet of office space per quarter, but posted a negative 100,000 square foot absorption figure between April and June. A tractor trailer became stuck on Chain Bridge this afternoon after attempting an ill-advised U-turn.

The driver of the truck apparently tried to make a U-turn at Chain Bridge and Canal Road NW, across the Potomac River from Arlington, but became stuck and in the process pierced the truck’s fuel tank on a rail at the northwest corner of the intersection.

Alexandria Mother Charged in Death of Infant Son

Police say Zoraida Magali Conde Hernandez, 32, allegedly left the infant in her car in a parking lot on the 200 block of N. Glebe Road while she went to work. The boy was in the car for 6 hours as temperatures hit sweltering levels on Friday.

Hernandez “noticed the baby was left inside his car seat when she arrived at a daycare to pick up one of her other children,” according to Arlington County Police. “The baby was unresponsive and she immediately drove to INOVA Alexandria hospital, where the child was pronounced dead a short time later.”

New Restaurant to Replace Baja Fresh, Zpizza in Rosslyn?

Monday Properties, the owner of 1100 Wilson Blvd, is asking the Board for permission to extend the outdoor cafe seating in front of both restaurants further out into the public right-of-way. The new sidewalk cafe will be about 732 square feet. County staff has recommended the Board approve the request.

In a staff report, it’s revealed that Monday is planning to combine the two restaurant spaces into one, larger space.

Ballston Power Outage May Stretch Into Morning

About 2,000 Dominion customers are currently without power, according to the utility’s outage map. At 10:30 p.m., Arlington County said the outage was impacting 2,800 customers.

Power is expected to be restored sometime between pre-dawn and mid-morning, according to police radio traffic.

UPDATED: Authorities Investigate Suspicious Truck in Courthouse

Arlington County police and bomb squad personnel are on the scene of a suspicious vehicle in the county-owned surface parking lot in Courthouse.

An Arlington sheriff’s deputy spotted the suspicious truck earlier this afternoon while walking from the area near the movie theater to the jail. It’s described as a Hertz rental truck.

County Vehicle Strikes Pedestrian in Crystal City

(Updated on 7/12/13) An Arlington County pickup truck struck a pedestrian in Crystal City this afternoon.

The county-owned Ford F-350 struck a female pedestrian on 12th Street between Army Navy Drive and Long Bridge Drive, according to scanner traffic. The woman was found under the truck and suffered non-life threatening injuries, including a leg and back injury.
