Smashed wall at the Clarendon Whole Foods

A portion of the low brick wall outside of the Clarendon Whole Foods was smashed by a shopper who apparently mistook the gas pedal for the brake.

The incident happened recently on the N. Edgewood Street side of the store’s surface parking lot. We’re told the shopper was either trying to park to trying to exit the parking space, but ended up hopping the curb and slamming into the wall instead, knocking over a large section of bricks.

Arlington Considering Allowing Car2Go to Go to D.C.

Car2Go launched in Arlington this past fall as a pilot program, but it only allows trips that start and end in Arlington. The Board is considering taking a first step to allowing cross-jurisdictional service between D.C. and Arlington.

After launching Oct. 22, Car2Go got off to slow start with customers, according to a county staff report. In response, Car2Go reduced its Arlington fleet from 95 cars to only 25 in January.

Renovated Pacers Store Reopens in Clarendon

After nearly two months of renovations, the Pacers Running Store in Clarendon reopened last week.

The store’s interior was totally revamped to offer a “shopping experience” similar to the new Pacers stores in the District, on 14th Street and in Navy Yard. The new space is more open, more organized and features more natural light.

VDOT Holds HOT Lane Meeting — Last night VDOT gave the first formal public presentation of its plan to expand the I-395 HOV lanes and convert them to High Occupancy Toll lanes. The meeting was held at Wakefield High School and addressed issues from toll pricing to transit improvements to sound walls. [WTOP, Fox 5]

Bike-on-Bike Crashes Problematic for the Law — A new article asserts that Arlington County Police normally do not file reports for bike-on-bike crashes. “This is a bike accident. Life happens,” an officer reportedly told a victim after one recent incident. Incomplete or nonexistent police reports have frustrated victims and attorneys seeking legal redress — and led to the hiring of private investigators who try to gather evidence and find witnesses. Crime Report: Man Beat Up After Complaining About Being Filmed

The incident started around 8:40 p.m. Thursday as a dispute between two groups of people, inside a restaurant on the 2900 block of Columbia Pike, police said.

One member of a group was upset about being filmed by members of the other group and complained to restaurant management, which reportedly kicked the offending group out.

Old Dominion Drive Blocked Due to Downed Lines

Old Dominion Drive is being shut down in both directions in the area of N. Wakefield Street and Lee Highway due to downed utility lines.

A truck brought down the lines and damaged at least one utility pole in the process.

Sweetgreen Coming to Clarendon

A Sweetgreen restaurant is coming to Clarendon, according to construction permits.

Sweetgreen will be located in a restaurant space next to Bronx Pizza, on the ground floor of the recently renovated 3100 Clarendon Blvd office building. The space appears to be in the early stages of interior construction.

Layoffs at Arlington-Based Opower

The move comes amid a wave of layoffs among tech companies that are struggling to attain or maintain profitability as tech investment euphoria cools. Across the economy, there’s weakness in the employment market and in corporate profits.

“We’ve reduced a small number of roles — about 45, including about 25 in our U.S. offices,” Opower Vice President of Communications Matt Maurer said this morning in response to an inquiry from ARLnow.com. “It’s part of an effort to cut back on our overall spend in sales and marketing and R&D.”

Lest there be any doubt that our tipsters were right about what’s replacing the now-closed Greene Turtle in Ballston, signs are now up announcing a new Applebee’s location.

The signs, on the ground floor of 900 N. Glebe Road, say the restaurant is “coming soon,” after renovations. The tipsters say to expect an opening date this summer.
