‘Snowcrete’ clearing operations cost Arlington $4.5M in unbudgeted costs

Clearing operations after this January’s snow and ice storm cost Arlington County upwards of $4.5 million.

The county’s response to the Jan. 25 winter storm — including hauling over 2 million pounds of snow from commercial corridors, clearing over 900 bus stops and running emergency operations for 165 hours straight — far exceeded the Department of Environmental Services’ base budget for snow operations.

No more free parking after hours at several National Landing parking garages

Free weekend and evening parking is ending this week at several popular parking garages in Crystal City and Pentagon City.

JBG Smith — the prolific owner, operator and developer of numerous properties throughout National Landing and the D.C. area — will begin charging motorists a modest fee to park after-hours beginning on April 1.

Demolition begins next week in Clarendon redevelopment project

Demolition is expected to get underway next week at a Clarendon office tower, making way for a 315-unit multifamily building.

Developer Carr Properties has formed a joint venture with Northwestern Mutual to fund a redevelopment project at 3033 Wilson Blvd, demolishing a more than 40-year-old office building to make way for an eight-story residential building.

Ireland’s Four Courts named ‘America’s Best Soccer Bar’ in nationwide contest

An iconic Irish pub in Courthouse has been crowned champion in a nationwide competition to name the nation’s best soccer bar.

Ireland’s Four Courts (2051 Wilson Blvd) beat out competition from around the country in an online voting contest organized by the soccer media company Men in Blazers. The selection process for America’s Best Soccer Bar included thousands of votes and hundreds of nominees from all 50 states.

Restorative justice group continues expanding options for Arlington crime victims

A local restorative justice organization is approaching its fifth anniversary with a continued emphasis on expanding options for victims of crime and abuse in Arlington.

Restorative Arlington, a nonprofit that supports victims seeking justice and accountability outside the traditional criminal justice system, has been building its presence both inside and outside the courthouse. In addition to promoting diversion programs, the group has been working with survivors of abuse through a partnership with Doorways and running a pilot program that trains community leaders in restorative justice practices.

As debate over Virginia’s redistricting referendum heats up ahead of next month’s vote, a partisan newspaper advancing Democrats’ arguments has begun showing up in Arlington mailboxes.

The latest issue of The Virginia Independent — a product of American Independent Media, which specializes in content that mimics the form of impartial news sources in order to promote progressive causes — devotes a significant amount of space to the upcoming April 21 vote on redistricting.

Centreville man, 19, arrested after series of armed robberies at Arlington businesses

A 19-year-old has been arrested in connection with a series of armed robberies in Arlington last month.

Carlos Lopez Sparks, a Centreville resident, faces a total of 20 charges stemming from four incidents on Feb. 24 and 25 — where he is accused of threatening store employees and customers with a gun and demanding cash before fleeing the scene.

Arlington once again ranked No. 4 best ‘city’ to live in America

Arlington has maintained its No. 4 spot in a ranking of the United States’ best “cities” to live.

It’s the third year in a row that Arlington has placed fourth in the annual Niche ranking of the nation’s localities. As in 2025 and 2024, several of the county’s neighborhoods also earned high honors.

Big ‘No Kings’ protests planned along Glebe Road and I-66 overpasses this weekend

Another wave of “No Kings” protests will be taking place along several high-visibility areas in Arlington on Saturday.

They’re part of over 3,000 similar events happening around the country on the same day, protesting the Trump administration and its tactics. Culminating in a large afternoon protest along an eight-mile stretch of Glebe Road, the actions will follow similar demonstrations last June and October.

Piles of “snowcrete” and debris are still hanging on at a Virginia Square site almost two months after the winter storm that hit Arlington in late January.

Two main mounds of ice are still present in the parking lot at 1400 N. Quincy Street as of today (Monday) — the larger of which appears to be around 5 to 6 feet high at some points.
