Leadership Arlington Seeks ’40 Under 40′ Nominees

Nominees are not restricted to those who live and/or work in Arlington; they simply have to be from the D.C. area, be under 40 years old by the awards luncheon on Dec. 4 and “demonstrate impact through their leadership personally and/or professionally,” according to a Leadership Arlington press release.

The criteria being considered is impact on the community or the individual’s professional situation. “This event is an opportunity to show support and invest in this next generation of trailblazers,” the nomination call states.

Arlington County Fair Returns in Two Weeks

The fair will again be held on the grounds of the Thomas Jefferson Community Center (3501 2nd Street S.). The fair starts at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday and Thursday, at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday and at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday. As always, the fair is free to attend.

Just like last year, the fair will have a 5k run/walk, for which registration is still open, at 8:00 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 9. There will be multiple piglet races every day — including five on Friday — making sure no visitor will be in the park for more than a few hours without getting a chance to see one of the fair’s most popular attractions.

“Investors” Choose The Green Spoon at Startup Smackdown

(Updated at 1:25 p.m.) Gluten-free food delivery company The Green Spoon was the people’s choice among Arlington startups at last night’s ARLive Startup Smackdown event in Crystal City.

Green Spoon founder Hanson Cheng and his team served guests lemon garlic chicken, cauliflower mash and truffled mushrooms, earning $1.48 million in “investment.” Every guest was given $100,000 in fake $10,000 bills to invest in their favorite companies. A total of $11.26 million in “venture capital” was invested.

Crystal Twilighter 5K Returns Saturday

The summer race, organized by Pacers, is dubbed “the hottest 5K in town.” It kicks off at 8:30 p.m. and is followed by a post-race party. Registration is $40 for adults over the age of 18, but $20 for those 18 years old or younger.

The Arlington County Police Department is planning on closing a number of roads to make way for the race. From ACPD:

ARLive Startup Smackdown is Tonight

Tickets are $20 at the door or can be purchased online. The tickets cover appetizers, beer and wine, as well as fake dollars to invest in one of 17 companies. The company with the most fake money at the end of the night wins a lunch at Good Stuff Eatery in Crystal City with Crystal Tech Fund founder and investor Paul Singh.

The event is also a chance to network with Arlington entrepreneurs and see the future of business in the county. Several of the companies have secured a combined millions of dollars in angel investment and venture capital in recent years.

Startup Smackdown One Week Away in Crystal City

Crystal City BID, in association with ARLnow.com, will be hosting the ARLive Startup Smackdown next Tuesday (July 22) from 6:00 to 8:30 p.m. The event is being held at the offices of Crystal Tech Fund, at 2231 Crystal Drive.

Attendees can check out the products and services being offered by local startups, and will be given play money to “invest” in the company or companies they like best. The winning company will receive an exclusive lunch with venture capitalist Paul Singh.

Dance Celebration Planned for Colombian Independence

The dance ensemble El Tayrona will showcase “folklore in a passion of feelings,” at the annual Colombian National Day event at Gunston Arts Theater One (2700 S. Lang Street) this Saturday.

The event celebrating Colombian independence will start with Colombian cuisine from Restaurante Monserrate at 3:00 p.m. before dance performances begin at 6:00 p.m. The dances will depict Colombian folklore by reflecting its different regions, El Tayrona founder and choreographer Marta Chiari said. Some dances will embody the Andean region and the Pacific and Caribbean coasts.

Central Library to Host Adult ‘Recess’

The event will take place on Thursday, July 31, starting at 9:00 p.m. Attendees are encouraged to “bring their friends and inner child” to the event, which will include Nerf tag, capture the flag, Twister and homemade cookies and milk from gourmet cookie bakery Noshy.

Following the event, participants can continue to O’Sullivan’s Irish Pub in Clarendon, where Late Night Recess ticket-holders will get a free appetizer with a $10 purchase. The event is intended to help the library engage with the young professional set.

Road Closures in Arlington for Fourth of July

Several roads in Arlington, including some major arteries, will be closed to drivers for Independence Day celebrations tomorrow.

Memorial Bridge and Memorial Circle will be closed all day, from 6:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. From 1:00 to 11:00 p.m., Marshall Drive will be closed from Route 110 to N. Meade Street, and Meade Street will be closed from Marshall Drive to 14th Street N.
