Chewing is such an important part of our pet’s dental health (and with dogs, helps with mental stimulation as well!) – yet we commonly see dogs presenting with broken teeth from chewing seemingly “appropriate” treats; and cats and dogs with severe periodontal disease despite regular dental treats. What gives?

The following bi-weekly column is written and sponsored by Dog Paws n Cat Claws, which provides a heart-centered and safe environment for your pets. Conveniently located at 5818-C Seminary Road in Bailey’s Crossroads, DPnCC offers doggy daycare, boarding, grooming, walking and training services, plus in-home pet care.

It’s easy to say, “I love you” to our favorite people, but how do we communicate with our fur babies when we want to say, “I love you?” It’s easy once you learn how to translate their distinctive language of affection.

The sale of Pershing Manor fell through, prompting the owners of the controversial mansion to put it back on the auction block.

The property at 3120 N. Pershing Drive, which has been criticized by neighbors for its ostentatiousness, initially sold at auction for $2.2 million in December, ARLnow.com was told. The deed, however, was never transferred.

When relocating, one of the first questions you should ask yourself is if you are going to rent or buy. The answer is not always so straightforward.

This week’s Arlington Pet of the Week is Etta, a Persian rescue cat who lives with her rescue brother and sister. Here is what her owner, Joni, had to say about her:

Good Morning My Fellow Arlingtonians! As you can see, I am enjoying a glorious, sunny afternoon on the porch with mom and dad. I found my parents — although they like to say they found me — at the Fairfax County Animal Shelter and I was quite the mess! My previous owner passed away and her heirs didn’t want me because I was not a “show quality” Persian. But one glorious day, I knew I found my forever caregivers. They came and went but voila, two days later, I packed up and off we went to my forever palace! First thing’s first, a trip to the vet for a “well baby check-up” and then a much needed trip to the groomers to get rid of my matted fur and raccoon eyes. Persians require a lot of grooming which includes a daily eye cleansing and brushing but as you can see, I am sporting my Lion Cut! I live with my brother Nelson and sister Isabella (they are rescues as well) whom I chase around and frolic with… I also love to test out my dads gourmet cooking and enjoy learning about the stock market each morning.

Question: I’m preparing to sell my home this year and wondering if remodeling the 1990s kitchen and bathrooms will improve the resale value and help me sell faster or if I should leave it as-is. Is there a good way to decide which option is best?

This week’s Arlington Pet of the Week is Oliver, a playful mutt who loves to please everyone. Here is what his owner, Mark, had to say about him:

Oliver is a short-haired Collie/Retriever mix who came to us via the Lost Dog & Cat Rescue Foundation of Arlington when he was an 8-week-old pup. He is now a 3.5-years-old, healthy as can be, little “dudeman.” His mother was a rescue and Oliver was born in the shelter, so he has been cared for with love and affection his entire life. We were looking to adopt a pooch for several months before finally meeting Oliver at a PetSmart adoption event. It was love at first lick!
