On a recent afternoon along a stretch of N. Randolph Street in Ballston, a periodic thump-thump could be heard as drivers ran over a series of ruts in the road.

Some swerve or slow down substantially at an especially deep indentation midway down the 1100 block of N. Randolph Street. This is one of several dips between Washington Blvd and Fairfax Drive resulting from utility cuts during service line replacements.


With a half-billion dollar deal to modernize and expand Capital One Arena in place, the Washington Capitals are now mulling their future at the MedStar Capitals Iceplex in Ballston.

ARLnow has learned that the team recently started talking to Arlington County about potential modernizations and improvements to the 137,000 square foot, county-owned facility. The Iceplex opened in 2006 and serves as the Caps’ official NHL practice facility and headquarters, as well as the home ice for college, high school and beer league hockey teams.

Teen Arrested for ‘Street Takeover’ — “Several people have been identified and charged in connection to a ‘street takeover’ in Springfield on Sunday (March 31). The Fairfax County Police Department announced today (Wednesday) that detectives arrested and charged an 18-year-old man from Woodbridge and a 17-year-old Arlington [boy] who allegedly took part in a rowdy ‘mob’ in a parking lot in the 6600 block of Electronic Drive around 3 a.m.” [FFXnow]


Construction has begun on a replacement for two bridges destroyed in flash flooding back in 2019.

The main section of the new pedestrian bridge to span Lubber Run arrived yesterday (Tuesday) at 300 N. Park Drive. Work on the site, which began in February, is expected to wrap up sometime between July and September, county spokesperson Jerry Solomon said.

Two key pieces of legislation backed by one of Arlington’s state senators got the ax in Richmond last week.

Gov. Glenn Youngkin (R) on Thursday vetoed bills that would have legalized the sale of retail marijuana in Virginia and raised the state’s minimum wage. State Sen. Adam Ebbin (D), who represents part of Arlington and Fairfax County as well as Alexandria, co-sponsored both bills.


A partnership between an apartment owner and a coworking provider has brought the office environment to an apartment complex in Arlington’s Long Branch Creek neighborhood.

A group of juvenile suspects is facing an array of charges following a reported armed robbery in Pentagon City.

The incident happened around 4:45 p.m. on Easter Sunday in the area of the Westpost shopping center. Police say a teen girl had just parked when two girls from a group of seven juvenile suspects stole her keys, leading to a confrontation in which the suspects threatened the victim with pepper spray and what turned out to be an airsoft gun.


Arlington Transit workers have overwhelmingly voted to join the same union as their Metro counterparts.

ATU Local 689 announced this morning that 99% of workers — including bus drivers, technicians and cleaners — voted to join the union last month. More, below, from a press release.


Church Development Plan ‘On Hold’ — “The two partners in June of 2023 applied to the Arlington County government for a zoning change that would allow the construction of a building that could accommodate as many as 92 residential apartments for seniors 55 or 62 and older… Garrett Jackson, APAH’s Director of Resource Development and Communications, told the Blade that APAH on behalf of the church asked the Zoning Administrator to put the application on hold while the church and APAH consider revisions for the project.” [Washington Blade]

A 39-year-old Arlington man with a notable criminal history is facing more charges after an incident over the weekend.

Police say Anthony Jeffers, Jr. tried to steal items from a store on the 4900 block of Columbia Pike — a block that includes a 24-hour 7-Eleven location — around 10:30 p.m. this past Saturday.


An Alexandria man has been charged after allegedly trying to bring a loaded gun onto a flight at Reagan National Airport over Easter weekend.

TSA officers detected the gun at a security checkpoint and airport police confiscated it.
