Its official: Arlington and the D.C. area will be under Extreme Heat Warnings over the next couple of days.
The National Weather Service just upgraded the earlier watch to a warning, in effect from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday and Friday. Dangerously hot conditions with heat index values above 110 are expected, posing a risk to people and pets spending significant time outdoors — or in hot buildings or vehicles.
The hottest stretch of the year is almost here.
A heatwave with temperatures near and into the triple digits kicks off Wednesday and it has already prompted a Heat Advisory and an Extreme Heat Watch from the National Weather Service.
Update on 6/28/26 — Another Flood Watch has been issued and is in effect through 2 p.m. Sunday, covering D.C., Arlington, Alexandria, Falls Church and Fairfax County. It comes as a stalled front drops heavy rain on the area.

Update at 6:50 p.m. — Nearly 1,000 Dominion customers are without power in Arlington, according to the utility company’s website. Most of the outages are in the county’s far northern neighborhoods along the border with McLean, which is experiencing widespread outages after the storms.
Update at 6:15 p.m. — A second line of storms is arriving and has prompted a second Severe Thunderstorm Warning, below, which is in effect until 7 p.m.
The entire D.C. area, including Arlington and Falls Church, is under a Severe Thunderstorm Watch tonight (Monday).
The watch is in effect until 9 p.m.
