The 2025 New York Cat & Dog Film Festivals are coming to the Arlington Cinema and Drafthouse at 2903 Columbia Pike. It’s a two-night event on Tuesday, May 6 and Wednesday, May 7 “celebrating the love, charm, and companionship of our feline and canine friends.”

The Arlington resident and 2021 Yorktown High School graduate recently won her initial individual first-place medal in the NCAA women’s national championships in this year’s Division I meet.

Question: How much of an impact do you think the ROAD to Housing Act will have on housing affordability in Arlington?
Answer: The Road to Housing Act became law ten days ago, with the stated goal of improving housing affordability in the United States.
I don’t see many policies in the Act that will improve affordability in the Arlington/Northern VA/DC Metro markets, outside of incentives for more affordable multi-family housing, but there are policies that should improve affordability in other markets that are more saturated with institutional investors that own swaths of single-family homes (e.g. Atlanta and Phoenix) and for manufactured/mobile homes.
The Local Conversation Needs to Change
If we are going to improve affordability in our market, most of the change has to be done locally/regionally, not nationally, but it requires a paradigm shift in how we discuss and solve for housing affordability.
Affordability Disconnect: Near Term Expectations Not Realistic
A disconnect between housing affordability expectations and reality prevents the right community and political conversations from happening. We expect/demand housing affordability immediately, ignoring the difficulty, and consequences, of achieving it that quickly.
Stable and healthy housing affordability is a long-term process requiring gradual change over a 10-15+ year period.
Demand-Side Solutions Won’t Work
Demand-side solutions, such as lower interest rates or easier financing, artificially inflate home values, as seen during the COVID-era housing boom and early 2000s. They are not a good long-term solution to affordability because they push values even higher (along with your property taxes) and affordability gets worse when rates/lending normalize and no longer provide artificially low monthly payments.
Supply-Side Solutions Are Not Immediate
Most policy discussions focus on supply-side solutions: building more/faster and denser housing (e.g. Arlington’s Missing Middle/Expanded Housing Option), incentivizing more existing home sales, or disincentivizing concentrated ownership by companies and individuals. Econ 101 tells us that more supply = lower prices = affordable housing (winner winner!).
This is the only path to stable, long-term housing affordability…BUT, at current interest rates, prices must drop 30-35% in the United States to become affordable, at current income levels. A 30-35% drop in home values would devastate the economy, so a supply-side solution won’t (shouldn’t) provide immediate affordability. (more…)
County Unemployment Rate Up — Arlington’s jobless rate was 2.7% in February, according to new Virginia Employment Commission data. That’s up from 2.5% in January and 2.1% a year before. In February, Arlington had 150,037 employed in the civilian workforce. The number looking for jobs was 4,189, an increase from 3,814 a month before and 3,413 a year ago. –Scott McCaffrey
Violent Bike Theft Near Rosslyn — “The juvenile male victim was outside on his bike when he was assaulted by four known juvenile suspects. Following the assault, two suspects stole the victim’s bike and subsequently fled the scene. The victim sustained serious, non-life threatening injuries and was transported to an area hospital and subsequently released following medical treatment. During the course of the investigation, officers identified the four juvenile male suspects in their teens and obtained petitions.” [ACPD]
Another Rainy I-395 Crash — “It happened again: When it rains, watch out for I-395S near the Arlington Ridge Rd overpass. The latest crash at this spot was around 11:45. There have been so many crashes there on wet roads I am convinced there’s standing water or something else going on with the left side of the road at that point.” [Dave Statter/X]

Once members of rival boys high-school basketball teams in Arlington, this past winter Alan Treakle and Liam Vitters played different roles for the same Division I men’s college squad that won a national championship.
Treakle, a Wakefield High School graduate, was the director of basketball operations, and Yorktown High grad Vitters was a walk-on freshman forward for the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga Mocs, which won the National Invitational Tournament with a 5-0 record.
She once helped an Arlington youth team win a national flag-football championship. And now, Azzi Fudd has a college-level national basketball championship to her credit.
Last Sunday (April 6), the Arlington resident scored 24 points and grabbed five rebounds to help the University of Connecticut women’s basketball team win the Division I NCAA national championship with an 82-59 victory over the University of South Carolina in the 2025 title game.
Sometimes overlooked in the crush of Arlington springtime sports is George Washington University’s home baseball season at Barcroft Park.
In a long-standing agreement with Arlington, George Washington has been playing home games at the artificial-turf Tucker Field venue at Barcroft Park since 1993.
The potential for foul weather kept some of the crowd away, but otherwise the annual Arlington Little League opening-day ceremonies went as usual on Sunday (April 5).
The afternoon event began with the traditional parade of dozens of teams through a tunnel of players from varsity high-school baseball and girls softball teams in Arlington onto field No. 1 at Barcroft Park.
In recent Liberty District high-school baseball games between Arlington rivals, the host Wakefield Warriors topped the Washington-Liberty Generals, 8-5, then the Yorktown Patriots downed visiting Wakefield, 9-3.
For Wakefield (2-4, 2-3) against W-L, Cort Bringham was the standout. On the mound, the right-hander worked 6 1/3 innings of two-hit ball (one earned run), fanned five and walked two to get the win. With the bat, Bringham had three hits, with a double, and drove in three runs.
