As the much-anticipated Missing Middle trial began this week, the Arlington NAACP is arguing that the case has wide-ranging implications for racial equity.

In a 55-page amicus brief filed in advance of opening statements on Monday, the local NAACP chapter argued that single-family zoning has racist origins and that undoing Missing Middle would be a step backward for racial progress.

Between the ages of 18 months and 2.5 years old, children experience enormous growth. During this stage of development, children learn how to communicate feelings, navigate transitions, develop critical thinking skills, and build friendships. More families are turning to Montessori education because it empowers children to become more independent, motivated, and capable through hands-on learning and thoughtfully prepared classroom environments.

The Children’s House Montessori School Difference

At Children’s House Montessori School (CHMS) in Arlington and Alexandria, that development begins with classrooms intentionally designed for toddlers. Walk into a CHMS toddler classroom, and you will see children pushing in their chairs, preparing their own snack, cleaning up after themselves, watering plants, practicing language skills, and independently choosing lessons from child-sized shelves. Every material and lesson has a purpose: to help young children build coordination, concentration, and the foundation for academic and social success during one of the most important stages of development.

Throughout the school day at CHMS, toddlers naturally build meaningful friendships with one another, whether that means engaging in parallel play on the playground, working on a lesson beside a friend, or helping a classmate clean up spilled water. These small everyday moments help children develop empathy, social skills, and patience within the classroom community.

As children grow more comfortable expressing themselves, experienced and certified CHMS teachers gently guide them to learn how to communicate their needs and interact respectfully. The calm and collaborative Montessori environment gives young children opportunities to build emotional awareness alongside academic readiness from an early age. (more…)

An eight-story apartment building could be replacing an aging Clarendon office building, where a new restaurant just opened.

A development application for 3033 Wilson Blvd, filed last week by Carr Properties, calls for 312 units of housing ranging from studios to two-bedroom apartments. The building across from the Clarendon Metro station would have a parking garage with 344 spaces, plus almost 7,000 square feet of retail space.

Internationally acclaimed pianist Carlos César Rodríguez joins NCE for a luminous performance of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s beloved Piano Concerto No. 21 in C major, “Elvira Madigan,” celebrated for its elegance, lyricism, and timeless appeal. The program is further enriched by Florence Price’s Adoration, a work of profound beauty and spiritual warmth, and Johan Svendsen’s Romance, cherished for its lyrical charm and expressive simplicity.

Another hot day is on tap, with outdoor Arlington parks and rec activities from noon until 8 p.m. cancelled again amid yet another Heat Advisory (another advisory has already been issued for Wednesday).

As long as the area is scorching, the National Weather Service recommends staying in air-conditioned spaces and drinking plenty of fluids. An iced coffee run meets these conditions, but with it being so hot for so long, maybe you’re looking for something more unique than your average cold coffee.
